Planning

The other day, I had a thought upon seeing the Where's Waldo books: were these childhood "mind game" books really my introduction to existentialism? You're always looking for Waldo in these books, but who are you really searching for? Yourself! And how many people have similar appearances to Waldo, reminding one that individuality is non-existent? Look at what you have taught me, Waldo.

In other news, I am planning a Halloween costume. I always make my own Halloween costumes, that was the original intent when I started to learn how to sew (and now it has become something so much more and why do you have a website, Mood Fabrics, so I am always aware of your incredible fabric?). Last year, after a botched attempt at a Suikoden II Viki costume, it transformed into a Theda Bara costume. Maybe I will finish that costume someday, when I don't give myself a week to finish one too many components. The year before that, I was Yukiko Amagi from Persona 4. And before that, Reika Mishima from RahXephon. Most of these costumes were made on the cheap; in fact, my Reika costume was made out of bed sheets and dyed mustardy/goldish. But if there's one thing I'm decent at when it comes to sewing, it is altering a pattern. This began when I started making costumes for my niece and she wanted a Princess Daisy costume.

So this year, my costume will consist of a dress and a jacket. For the dress, I'll be using BurdaStyle's Long Sleeved Dress 08/2010 (and hacking off the sleeves as well as the ruffle) and the jacket will consist of both BurdaStyle's Larissa and the Casual Bomber Jacket 06/2015. And as Jason Schwartzman did for his audition for Rushmore, I will be making my own badges. If it isn't glaringly apparent who I'm going to be, my primary colors for this costume will be red and black. And I might be using stretch twill or ponte knit for the first time. Experimenting with fabric!

I'm really excited about it and would love to start on a muslin, but I do have to wait for my swatches to come in and I should probably look for a cheap stretch material to practice on. It always seems as though I'm far more excited to sew costumes than actual wearable clothes. I am hoping that these articles I make will be wearable in public. The dress, yes. The jacket, maybe. Someone might recognize what it's from though.

But no fan-service!

thoughts, sewing, blah life
