Five songs. That's all. I wanted to cover music I don't normally talk about, so instead of having one post with a video, I'll post a few that I like.
1.
For Reverend Green by Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam is full of some pretty incredible songs, but what I really love about For Reverend Green is that it has such a beautiful melody in the middle of all the weirdness. I love the singing on this as well, especially when singing "For Reverend Green", in that it starts out clear and begins to break down. I adore Animal Collective for refusing to be labeled with a genre and it makes this spectacular album all the more listenable.
2.
Nothing's Wrong by Architecture in Helsinki - I don't want to live in a universe where Architecture in Helsinki isn't considered party music. Their music is always so much fun. The first time I heard this song, I didn't expect the tempo change, but that's what I love about them. The lyrics are adorable, too: "Ignore me in the parking lot, I'm petrified by conversation."
3.
He's Not a Boy by The Like - Incredibly catchy. I listened to it because I saw the title and thought the song was about something else entirely, but it's cute for what it is. Plus, that drummer is especially vindictive. I don't think anything else by The Like is nearly as good as this, but their new sound is definitely better than their old sound. That is, if sound can be new and old.
4.
Mending of the Gown by Sunset Rubdown - I heard They Took A Vote And Said No and was hooked, so when Sunset Rubdown released Random Spirit Lover, I was so on top of that. And I love every song on this album, but Mending of the Gown has a great opening. "My name and my spirit, they're both corrupted." When I hear this song start, I get pretty excited.
5.
Synchrotron by Simon Bookish - This sounds so much like Roxy Music, when they still had Brian Eno. But there are times when I appreciate that, especially since Bookish gets the spirit of Roxy Music down so well. I love hearing the sax in more recent music, too. See, it wasn't just for solos in the 70's!
