Prompt: Start in the Middle
Another prompt from my creative writing class. The challenge was to start in the middle of a story instead of at the beginning. I took Inuyasha, added a little Bleach, and used the word well. Lucky happenstance, but honestly was a random pick out of the dictionary. ^_~ Enjoy.
The Well
“You want me to jump?”
Ichigo looked down at the well, it’s hard-packed bottom not inviting. The girl next to him nodded brightly.
“Go ahead, Ichigo. I promise it’ll work.” She pulled a hank of hair behind her ear, her yellow backpack shifted.
“Yuki, you do realize this is a dry well, right?” At Yuki’s nod, Ichigo sighed. “Okay, really now. When did you escape from the mental hospital? Is this even your house?”
Yuki huffed. “My mother used this well all the time when she was our age! I’ve already been through twice. Just jump, you’ll see!”
Ichigo scratched his head. His black roots were showing. He’d have to dye it orange again. “Alright, but if I break my legs, you’re paying the hospital bill.” He took a deep breath and lowered himself into the well, it’s square stone walls making him claustrophobic. His fingertips let go of the lip of the well and he plummeted.
Instead of hitting the bottom, a soft blue light engulfed him. Images of days gone by flitted around him, cool hands pulled him deeper. His feet landed softly on the hard-packed dirt. Fresh air invaded his lungs, absent of exhaust and other pollution.
He looked up to see a clear blue sky, a far cry from the rotting wood of the well house. Yuki appeared next to him, a smug look on her face.
“I told you the well was a portal to the past.”
