Sam zipped up his duffel bag and gave his dorm room one more look over to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything before locking his door and heading down to the parking lot. He and Dean were heading to South Dakota to attend Bobby’s civil union to his partner Crowley, a man he’d been with for almost ten years. Sam was happy for his pseudo-father; the man had a lot of unhappiness in his life before he met Crowley.

A few students waved at him as he left the dorms, and he returned the gesture just before he turned the corner and stopped dead. Instead of his brother’s black ‘67 Chevy Impala sitting like a stud, a rusted, puce colored ‘81 Honda sat in its place. As it idled, every so often a puff of black smoke coughed out of the exhaust. What was worse, instead of his brother leaning against the car, or even Castiel, his brother’s boyfriend, Castiel’s cousin Gabriel was relaxed and grinning smugly at him.

“Hey, Sammo! Looks like we’ll be driving buddies for the next twenty six hours. Aren’t we lucky?”

Sam felt his stomach sinking to his sneakers. “Where’s Dean? He was supposed to pick me up.”

“Oh, you didn’t get the memo? Deano and my baby cousin decided to go the distance with each other. Personally, I’m glad, and you should be too, because were you really looking forward to being the third wheel for the next eighteen hundred miles?”

He didn’t want to admit it, but Sam knew Gabriel had a point. Dean and Castiel hadn’t gotten too far into their relationship yet, had only admitted their feeling to each other two months ago after years of eye fucking, and Sam was sure that nothing would come of this trip between them if Sam was there, too.

He only wished they’d told him ahead of time so that he could find a car to borrow. Because honestly? He hated Gabriel’s guts.

~

“…and I pity…any girl who isn’t me tonight!”

“For the love of God, shut up! Fine, you can listen to your cd’s! Just stop singing!”

Sam ignored the way Gabriel pumped his fist in victory and tried to concentrate on his book. They hadn’t even made it out of San Francisco yet, and he was already contemplating jumping out of the car while it was going seventy miles and hour.

~
“Do you like candy?”

“No, I hate candy.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t like a lot of sweet stuff.”

“Why?”

“Because I just don’t.”

“Why?”

“If you ask me why one more time, I swear on the life of my firstborn I’ll steer us into oncoming traffic. Shut up, Gabriel.”

“…Why?”

~

“Do you like waffles? Yeah we like waffles! Do you like pancakes? Yeah we like pancakes! Do you like French toast? Yeah we like French toast! Doo, doo da doo, can’t wait to get a mouthful! Waffles!”

Sam gave up trying to get Gabriel to stop singing the most annoying songs in the world. He pretended he wasn’t humming along under his breath.

~

Four hours after they hit the road, Gabriel finally pulled into a rest stop. Sam couldn’t get out of the car fast enough. He had to piss like a racehorse and if he had to stand one more minute around the obnoxious jackass. Gabriel followed him into the bathroom, and then made a beeline for the extensive walking path located behind the building. Sam scowled. That was his plan, and now he either had to suck it up and continue with stretching out his legs, or he could act like an eight year old and sulk by the car.

A peek over at the little rust bucket showed that it was just as ugly as it was when Sam fist got in it and he turned his feet towards the trails. There were other people walking about, a few with their dogs and others attempting to herd their kids back to the parking lot. Sam weaved through them all and made his way to the back of the trail, far enough away from the highway that the sounds of cars rushing by could almost be ignored. There were benches set up every so often, and back here there was one facing the shallow valley that spread out below them. Unfortunately, Gabriel beat him to the spot and was slouching on the bench, legs stretched out and arms folded behind his head. Sam refused to let the other man have monopoly over the view and sat at the far end of the bench.

They sat in silence and stared out at the undeveloped wilderness in front of them, the faint echoing of cars melting into the sounds of rushing wind and singing birds. There were splashes of wildflowers all over the place, and butterflies hovered all around. Sam peeked over at Gabriel and saw that he had his eyes shut, a small smile playing on his lips. His foot was tapping to some unknown rhythm.

In all the time that Sam had known him, Gabriel had been nothing but a thorn in his side, an loud, obnoxious man who had nothing better to do that annoying the hell out of him. But under the warm sunshine, blanketed by the sweet scent of flowers and humming his own tune, Gabriel had never seemed so beautiful as he did then.

~

“You know they’re probably laughing at us.”

Sam opened his eyes, unaware that he’d fallen asleep. The sun hadn’t dipped too far, so he’d been out for less than an hour. “Who?”

“Dean and Cas. They know we don’t get along, that you hate me.”

“I don’t.”

Gabriel looked over at him. “What?”

“I don’t hate you. You’re just annoying as Hell.”

Gabriel didn’t say anything for a long moment, and Sam wondered what he was thinking about. Just when Sam was about to say something, anything, to change the subject, Gabriel blinked and gave him a wide smile. “Well, let’s hit the road. We still have a long ways to go.”

Sam ignored the way his heart fluttered at the sight of that smile.

~

The drive to Salt Lake City was boring, mostly flat arid desert and an occasional hill. Sam’s revelation that he didn’t, in fact, hate Gabriel but only found him annoying opened up an opportunity to play I Spy. Both of them ignored the fact that everything was either a shade of brown or white and tried to stump each other. Gabriel was the most creative, and had Sam begging for the answer on more than one clue.

Years of road tripping with his brother taught Sam how to pick out the motel with the cheapest price without sacrificing clean sheets. Gabriel, though, didn’t travel very often and refused to stay anywhere that didn’t have less than two floors. He argued that the more floors meant the more stars it had, and Sam let him win just to get him to stop whining. He was glad he did: room service was definitely a perk he was willing to pay extra for. When they got up to their room, however, they both realized they had a problem.

The hotel they were staying at was hosting a convention for some television show, Preternatural or something like that, and they were lucky enough to get the last room not designated for the convention goers. They were okay with that, but what the mâitre d’ forgot to tell them, was that their room only had one king-sized bed. And of course Gabriel, being as sharp of wit as he was (Sam would deny thinking that to his grave if anyone asked him), took immediate advantage of the situation.

“I have a bad back. I call the bed.”

Sam scowled and dropped his bag next to the ridiculously small couch that sat underneath the room’s only window. The damn thing was almost a loveseat. “Fine, but you’re driving again tomorrow then.” Gabriel flopped onto the bed and sank deeply into the fluffy bedspread. “You know, I’m pretty sure you can get an STI just from sitting on a hotel bed.”

He was rewarded with a single-finger salute.

~

Sam couldn’t sleep. As nice as the hotel was, it still had an in-the-window air conditioner and the damn thing creaked and groaned like it was on its death bed just like any other AC Sam had the displeasure of experiencing. Gabriel was snuggled comfortably under a mound of incredibly soft looking blankets (the closet had been raided for extra blankets and pillows and Sam was generously left the flattest and holiest of the bunch) with only the tip of his nose peeking out. Sam refused to let his mind finish the thought that Gabriel looked adorably sweet like that.

A quick glance at the clock confirmed that it was only 1 o’clock in the morning, much to early to get up and almost too late to hope for a good night’s rest if he fell asleep right now. Sam eyed the bed again. His unfortunate companion was curled up on the far side of the bed and there was more than enough space for Sam to lay down without touching. He could easily climb in and sleep comfortably and still wake up before Gabriel (with the help of habitually getting up early for an eight o’clock class) without the other man knowing. The air conditioner above him let out a screech and finally stopped running temporarily and Sam made his decision.

~

“You know, if you wanted to snuggle, you could have just asked.”

Sam jolted awake with a smug voice in his ear, much too close for it too be across the room where Gabriel was. His eyes flew open and met with chocolate brown only an inch away from his own. He flushed when he realized where he was. Sometime after he’d climbed into the bed, he must have migrated toward the closest source of heat (Gabriel) and latched on like an octopus. He had the smaller man wrapped up from shoulders to ankles and was laying halfway on him.

“What kind of woman do you think I am, Sam Winchester? I don’t put out on the first date.” Gabriel fluttered his eyes and pouted his lips. Sam rolled his own eyes and pulled away, grateful for the easy out given to avoid an awkward 12 hour drive. “Or is it your virtue you’re worried about? Perish the thought, princess. I like mine easy.”

“You’re such a gentleman. Don’t think too much into it, Gabe. That ancient piece of crap in the window was keeping me awake and you weren’t using half of the bed anyway.”

“And the reason for the unscheduled cuddle fest?”

“I’m pretty sure you were the one who snuggle over.”

“Then why were we on my side of the bed?”

Sam had no reasonable excuse for that one, and snagged the first shower instead. He smiled when he heard Gabriel curse as he grasped what had happened.

~

Sam never knew how much he hated driving through the mountains until they hit southern Wyoming. Up and down valleys, skirting cliff sides and traveling over bumpy roads was causing mayhem with his stomach. A road that was mostly a ten degree downgrade required them to stop at every emergency wayside stop and let the brakes cool, which was a small relief. Sam wasn’t sure what to think the first time they’d had to stop and he’d barely made it out of the car before losing his breakfast and, after the dry heaving quit found Gabriel crouching next to him and patting his back gently.

He wanted to ignore Gabriel, to pretend that he still hated the other man an go back to when he wasn’t so confused, but it was nice to have someone offer him comfort. He loved his brother, but Dean wasn’t the best candidate to play nursemaid.

Something hovered into his view and he looked to the side to see Gabriel holding out a water bottle to him. Sam took it gratefully and cleaned out the taste in his mouth. The water was warm, but it was clean. “Thanks.”

“Maybe you should try to sleep until we get out of the mountains. If I knew were such a delicate flower, I’d have brought some travel sickness pills.”

Sam huffed out a chuckle and took another swallow of water. “I’ll be fine. We should get going. Bobby will kill us if we’re late.”

“I’m more worried about Crowley getting his panties in a twist. He’s the biggest prima donna I’ve ever met.”

Sam laughed outright. “I agree with that.” He stood up, stretching his cramped muscles. Gabriel was standing closer than he’d realized and his shoulder brushed against his body the whole way up. Gabriel gasped and Sam felt a jolt shoot down his spine and into his groin. He met with light brown eyes, lips almost brushing. They stood, frozen, hardly daring to blink.

Gabriel took a shuddering breath and leaned forward. Sam met him halfway.

Bobby watched his over-stressed lover run back and forth across the house. His suit was only half done up and his shoes untied. “Have you seen my tie? I can’t find my tie. I put it on the back of the couch, and now it isn’t there.”

Bobby lifted his hand, the tie Crowley was looking for hanging from it. “You handed it to me when you decided to straighten the blanket on the couch, and then you walked off complaining that the boys weren’t here yet.”

Crowley took his tie with a frown. “Yes, where are those two? They assured us that they would be here in time for the ceremony, and the only ones who have showed up are that crazy psychic friend of yours and the barwoman and her daughter. If I wasn’t already gay, I’d worry that the overload of estrogen in the air was going to corrupt me.”

Just as Crowley was gearing up for another rant, Bobby head the familiar purr of
Dean’s Impala coming up the drive. His shoulders slumped with relief as his lover’s attention was diverted. They went out to greet Dean and was surprised to see Dean’s boyfriend Cas climb out of the passenger’s seat instead of Sam.

“Bobby! Dean approached him with outstretched arms, a shit-eating grin on his face. Bobby allowed himself to be hugged and whapped Dean on the back of the head. “Hey!”

“Where’s your brother, boy? Crowley’s about to wear a hole in the floor and he’s driving me crazy.”

“Sam’s not here? I’d have thought he’d be here before me and Cas.”

“How exactly is he getting here? If you hadn’t noticed, he isn’t in the backseat of your car.”

“He’s carpooling with Gabriel.”

“And you expect the two of them to show up in one piece? You do remember that they hate each other, right?”

Castiel stepped forward and hugged Bobby as he interrupted. “I’m afraid that it was my idea to make them ride together. I think that most of the antagonism between them is mostly just sexual tension. I’m hoping that twenty four hours of forced contact will allow them to realize what they’re really feeling for each other.”

Bobby shook his head. “I hope you know what you’re doing. Crowley’s going to have a shit fit if those two show up covered in blood.” He ushered the two boys into the house. “Go distract him for a while. He’s going to stroke out if he doesn’t calm down soon.”

~

It was a couple hours later when the sound of another car rumbled up the drive. The group of waiting men watched from the porch as first Sam, and then Gabriel climbed out of the beat up little Honda. As they walked to the house, Gabriel reached over and grabbed Sam’s hand and smiled up at him. Dean cursed and pulled out his wallet to fish out a wad of cash when Sam leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on Gabriel’s lips.
