No offense to anyone out there in LJ land who is Catholic, BUT...

I heard on the news, this morning, that the leading exorcist at the Vatican now claims that many prominent, frightening figures (among them, most notably, Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin) were not making their decisions on their own accord but were actually posessed by Satan.  In effect ( Read more... )

Yeah, I did hear that it was a certain priest who said these things and not the Pope. It was mentioned that this guy and the Pope are very close and that, of course, the priest serves as an advisor to the Pope, but sometimes things DO get over-hyped in the media. I guess what struck me most was the idea that even a single priest (let alone one in such high orders) was considering such an idea.

The strange thing about the Inquisition, too, is that it didn't just persecute non-Catholics (as I mistakenly implied) but most of them were Jewish. I also read, when doing a little research (very quick research, mind you) that the Spanish monarchy had as much to do with the Inquisition as the church itself, though BOTH profited from the confiscated monies and properties of those who were tortured and killed. At any rate, I do agree that it wasn't the mission of the Catholic church to murder people and the fact that it did was the result of corruption... bringing me back to what my original point was:

Hitler and Stalin were not posessed by Satan, they were corrupt (and perhaps mentally disturbed, but no more than your average sociopath). It enrages me when anyone (of any faith) uses Satan as an excuse for human behavior, giving him way more credit than he deserves while making humans seems even more pathetic in the light of imortality than they already are. Perhaps it would be more simply put if the priest had simply said, "Satan was well-pleased with Hitler and Stalin."

I asked Jamie what he thought about this dude saying crap like that (who was being interviewed by Vatican Radio and no doubt talking out of his butt anyway) and Jamie said this, "I also don't believe that Hitler and Stalin were possessed, but chose evil over good. The same goes with Catholics responsible for all the Inquisitions (the Spanish one isn't the only one), the Crusades, and the Colonization of the New World.
I choose to be good and forgive him for being myopic.
We all need to learn from our own mistakes, otherwise, we keep taking the low road instead of the high road."

It's funny 'cause if you research all these things the Catholic church "did" and "do", you will find someone just as, if not more, corrupt close at hand, or you will find others have done things just as bad. You know, kinda like the whole Gary, Indiana thing. New Orleans always had the bad reputation for crime and stuff, but for awhile there, wasn't Gary, Indiana worse? I could be wrong, as I didn't research, but went by memory.

I want to have an "Answers to stupid things Catholics do" talkshow. So people can come on there and ask questions about the Church and I can answer them. And I would have a pole like Jerry Springer, too.

Edited--I put the correct town in Indiana. Ahem. Not a tv show. And I looked it up. The murder rate is higher than NO when comared to the Nat'l Average.
