Calling the Waiter

Jul 23, 2002 14:10

"Hey, I wondered when you'd call."
"Yeah, I didn't know what the appropriate wait time is for pick ups, so I figured now would work." (Ugh, dorky thing to say)
"I'm glad you did. My friends kept asking me--did she call yet? all weekend. I hoped you would because you seemed so bold."
...
"Are you free tomorrow? I'm going to a pub in San Francisco with some friends for a Star Wars pub quiz. It's not my usual thing, but it should be fun."
"Well, I probably wouldn't be any good at it."
"Why not?"
"I've never seen Star Wars."
"Really?" (What?)
"Yeah, I don't really like science fiction"
(WHAT!! I love science fiction--I'm cool because I'm a girl that reads science fiction. Right? Quickly change subject.)
...
"So, I have another question for you."
"Sure."
"What's you ethnicity?"
"Oh, I'm Indian."
"Cooool." (Hmm, slightly deep, suspiciously husky voice there.)
"You don't have some sort of Asian fetish thing?" (Haven't dealt with one of those in a while.)
"No, I've never dated an Indian woman before. Usually, they're sort of quiet and stick to their families." (OK, let that one slide a bit.)
"Yeah, that's why I live 3000 miles away from them--so I can have a life." (Probably not the cleverest comeback--but timely. Just this weekend my Mom was lamenting that I live so far away, because, if I lived closer, I could stay home and save money. Then she cited 4-5 'kids' she knew, my age of course, who have great jobs and live at home and are saving tons of money. Yeah, to pay for all the therapy they'll need.)
...
Overall, I may not have been smooth, but the conversation went well and lasted 20 minutes. We have a tentative date set up for Monday night. I'm going to call him later in the week (to confirm that he indeed is not a serial killer or a rapist and) to confirm the date.

This is the second time in my life that I picked up a man--and both times, they seemed impressed, pleased and flattered. I think I'm going to like being the aggressor. I like the instant gratification of initiating flirting and it's an ego boost to have men feel grateful to me for my attentions to them. Even if I get rejected, there's always the next man. I've lost nothing by trying.
