So I've finally gotten around to update on the fact that I'm back at Bradley. And it may be lucky that I made it back on Tuesday night.
It all started at around noon when a friend of mine picked me up as well as a friend of hers who also goes to Bradley. We drive for a little more than an hour, when she notices that the engine temperature meter is waaaay past the H and there's some odd smell coming from the car. We pull over onto an exit ramp in Pontiac and all of a sudden the hood is steaming like crazy. So we figure we'll just let the engine cool down for a bit and be on our way. During this time a drivers ed teacher with a couple students stops and asks if everything was alright. We told him our situation and suggested that there was a gas station 2 miles away if we needed any help addition help. So we waited a little longer and another guy came to check out the engine. He checked the antifreeze and I guess that was low, so he got a can he had and poured the rest in along with some water and told us we needed more antifreeze so he showed us to Walmart. It took several tries to start up the car, but it eventually started.
At Walmart we talked with the auto shop guys and showed one of them the car. He told us that there was some loose belt that didn't transfer the antifreeze to the engine, and sent us to an auto mechanic shop because Walmart only changes tires and oil I guess.
So we drove to the auto mechanics. They tried to fix the belt, but I guess that wasn't the only problem. He also told us that "the motor was pretty much shot, and the car is a piece of shit." (Her car is an '88 Chevy Nova.) He told us that we most likely would not make it to Peoria, which is about 60-70 miles from Pontiac. He told us that he could tow it to Peoria, but it would cost $270, he could hold onto the car until her dad could come down and pick it up over the weekend costing $20/day or we could see if Walmart would allow her to keep the car in the parking lot until the weekend when her dad could tow it away himself. We chose the latter because that would cost us nothing. Luckily the auto mechanic was nice and didn't charge for the attempted fixing of the car.
It took us a while to start up the car again, but we eventually made it to Walmart. She called her brother to pick us up, so we had 2 hours to kill in Walmart. The majority of that time we spent testing out the little kids toys.
Her brother came and eventually, so we transferred our stuff from the Nova to his car and left the Nova in the Walmart parking lot till the weekend when her dad could come down and tow it back to Downers Grove himself. Also at this point it was pouring outside yet the driver still insisted on driving about 90-100 mph until he started skidding along I-74. Keep in mind we are driving in an SUV at this point, and I absolutely HATE SUVs. I was freaked out, but that put some sense into him and slowed him down considerably.
And finally at around 7 PM, we pulled up to Williams Hall where I was dropped off. At least I'll have a story forever and for the most part it was somewhat amusing.
