So I guess Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman in the next Christopher Nolan Batman movie.

Okay, so kneejerk reaction is "Oh fucking Jesus, I knew it was too much to hope that they finish a Batman series without sticking goddamn Catwoman in there somewhere". But this is Christopher Nolan, whom I thought was a lunatic for casting Heath Ledger as the Joker, so what the hell, right?

I mean, he's a smart, high-concept sort of guy, Christopher Nolan is. He made "Inception", after all. He's seeing angles I haven't even thought of yet.

Surely, he's aware of the fact that the Batman/Catwoman relationship hasn't been interesting for, like, 10 years now. He knows that their tired old "I love you but I fight crime"/"I love you but I'm a criminal" dynamic is now the Jar Jar Binx of comic-book romances. He knows that every time a story takes any time to focus on how Batman and Catwoman are A.) Still In Love, and B.) Still Not Fucking On A Regular Basis, the narrative comes to a screeching halt and causes readers to skip ahead five or six pages hoping to get past it.

Maybe he's considered doing something big and dynamic, like giving Catwoman an epic heel-turn and sending her firmly back into the Rogue's Gallery. Or maybe he could elevate her character and motivations to something beyond "I commit crimes to get Batman's attention so I can ask if he's ready to start fucking me on a regular basis yet". Or maybe they'll take a cue from comics, who have managed to turn Catwoman into an interesting character by taking her away from Batman and pairing her instead with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, or alternately having her tool around all by her lonesome... both things that negate the possibility of that same, extremely tired-and-played-out Batman/Catwoman romance subplot from rearing it's ugly and hideously familiar head.*

Because he's, you know, Christopher Nolan. And Christopher Nolan is better than that.

Isn't he?

*- Though this could lead to a "Catwoman" movie sequel, so mayeb it's not the best idea.
