CHARACTER:
Name: Ryoma Echizen
Source: New/Prince of Tennis
Canon Background:
Wikipedia! Ryoma is a 12-year-old (snarky brat) first year student at Seishun Academy, which would be his first school in Japan having being raised in the United States for the majority of his life. Before returning to Japan, he had already won four consecutive titles in the American Juniour Tennis tournaments in a little over a year. He is labeled as a prodigy at the age of 12 but does not go easy on himself and would rather push himself harder than rest.
As a tennis player, he has a large amount of stamina and can learn new techniques after seeing them performed a few times, as well as an exceptional talent for seeing moving objects (though that is also downfall when watching things that vibrate, since he sees it as many individual objects instead of just one). He is specifically a singles player and is pretty much useless at doubles unless the court is divided in half.
As a person in general, Ryoma tends to be arrogant but is usually able to back up his words with his skills. He is not quick to trust and tends to provoke his opponents before a match since they rarely take him seriously, being only 12 and all, and It is only after he defeats two of the regulars at his school's tennis club does it gain respect from them.
Despite his (snarky) behaviour, he is also childish at times and fearless to the point of recklessness, though he is rarely shown angry or out of control. Although many tennis players see Ryoma as their rival, he himself has a rather tunneled vision as to who he considers his rival, which is also the same for friends. He isn't seen socializing much and the closest to friends he has are the tennis club members (specifically the regulars).
On a miscellaneous note, Ryoma's bestest best friend is Karupin, his beloved Himalayan spotted cat (whom he will be taking with him or else he will throw a fit), and his most favorite thing in the world, besides tennis, is grape Ponta.
Ten Years Later:
Taken from just after he jumped the train in the first chapter of New Prince of Tennis, Ryoma will be rather confused as to what just happened. He hasn't lost any of his arrogance, especially in his skills at tennis, though he is a bit more friendlier than he used to be. Ryoma is still not quick to trust, but he'll give you a chance, more or less.
Though ten years have passed, his abilities and skills have not weakened, and if they have it's probably not noticeable unless you're very used to his moves. Ryoma, being the one who executes them, knows that he is (very) slowly losing the strength he once had as a 12 year old, and continues to push himself harder in order to stay at the level he used to be.

Third Person:
Bounce, bounce. Toss. Serve. Bounce. Toss. Serve. Lather, rinse, repeat.
It's boring. He doesn't know what happened or where he is, how he got here, or even why he's here, in this strange place where no one knows who he is and doesn't really care about him, but the first thing that comes to mind is--
Let's see how good the players are.
Turns out they're not as hot as they think they are. Just like the majority of the tennis players back home. Ah, Japan. Where art thou, Japan.
Sigh.
"Mada mada dane." He chuckles, easily returning the so called 'unreturnable serve' with a simple swing and the ever arrogant smirk on his lips. The vibration of the ball hitting the racket's sweet spot is faint and weak, barely even there. Unsatisfying. Not enough. The grin fades. "You still have a ways to go."
But is he talking to himself, or to his opponent?
Ryoma doesn't know. All he knows is that, despite shooting up a couple of inches, the strength in his swings has weakened, albeit slightly and barely noticeable. But it's there. He knows it. He knows his body better than anyone, after all.
And he's definitely going to get that strength back again. One way or another.
Hey. On the plus side.
Karupin's here, too.

I hope this isn't the best there is to offer. I'd be ashamed to let these people represent my city.
Karupin? Where are you go-- Karupin!
..Oh.
Ponta.
