TOKYO vs. OSAKA: An Empirical Analysis

Oct 06, 2009 10:57

Let's delve into Japan's longest standing rivalry that only people in Osaka seem to give a rat's ass about. After several years of living in Osaka and 3 days traipsing around Tokyo as a tourist, I feel that I have sufficient knowledge to evaluate the matter from an expert's perspective.

TOKYO: No One Sleep In Tokyo
OSAKA: ...to my knowledge, has ( Read more... )

OK, I have to differ with you on the Tokyo vs. Osaka "talking properly" point... just from a standpoint of Osaka-ben vs. hyoujungo (^_^) I can understand Osaka-ben for the most part, but I can't use it myself. Also there are a couple of words that come up repeatedly in Osaka-ben that I just do not understand... at all. What's "chaunen"? Is that a word? Do you recognize that? WTF does it mean??

Also, I had Greek food in Tokyo and I agree -- it was fan-freakin'-tastic. I hadn't had Greek food in ages, which made it even more delicious to me... although it was definitely pricey. I seem to recall my dinner being like 5000 yen or something... and that's not including drinks, I think we got a bottle of retsina or something too.

Oddly enough there's also a Greek restaurant in Sapporo -- I found it while walking around at random. They had a Greek flag out front. Turned out they had pretty damn good food too, but the people I went with almost all ordered fish! I was like WTF is wrong with you people... this is Japan. You ( ... )

Thank you (@_@) I've been wondering about that for a while now. I figured it was some kind of negation but wanted to be completely sure.

A couple of Greek places I found online were stupid expensive (like 5-6000 a head and up), but the one we went to (Spyro's in Roppongi) was reasonable. More like 5-6000 for both of us and we got a free jar of green olives. I had dolmades, spanakopita, pasticcio, and baklava. Tried ouzo for the first time too... that chit is strong! Tastes a lot like absinthe too.

Yeah, ouzo is not for fucking around with. I had four ouzo shots last year at my father's company Christmas party, which was at a Greek place (obviously). I felt fine after each individual shot, so I just kept on going, ya know? Well I blacked out the entire end of the night. I don't remember a goddamn thing after the fourth shot (@_@)

Mmmm, dolmades and spanakopita are two of my faves. I looooooove moussaka though -- that's my #1 favorite Greek dish. I assist my mom in making homemade baklava every year for Christmas -- you and Tako will have to come by and get some when y'all move back to the States (^_^) Actually, that reminds me, I was meaning to ask you... are you guys planning on coming back to south FL? Or do you have plans to go somewhere else and see what life is like out there?

Dude, I'm all over that. Thanks!

We're gonna be in south FL at first, but hopefully not for too long... maybe a year or so. I appreciate it a lot more than I used to, but I don't see any reason why I should live in a hot, humid place with no mountains if I don't have to. It's also the most dangerous place in the country to be a road cyclist.

Word. Well, we'll definitely have to get together while you guys are in the area! (^_^)
