Contata - We're Not Koi

Jul 05, 2011 13:08

Miss judifilksign was GOH and had asked D and I if we would be willing to join her as our band, "We're Not Koi" .... ohhh let me think.... errrr YES jump up and down hop, squeeeeee.

Contata was a great con! I wasn't online for the weekend as $10 per IP address per day is out of my budget plan but.. "I'm baaaack". Still hyped from chocolate and espresso beans and coffee and joy ... drove back last night and then bounced for a few hours. sorry rms_butterfly fuzzyvanman catsleftpaw perhaps I was just a little wired... (14 hours later, still am lol)

D flew in from Denver to Columbus midnight, Wednesday night so we could drive to NJ on Thursday in time to be human for Friday. I didn't get the memo that we'd be driving at 3mph for a couple of New Jersey hours on some random highway lol I hate construction season!!!

We did find our hotel and our other hotel and then we found the swimming pool and then we found peteralway. Judi and D and I have been working on a few of Peter's compositions and were hoping to get a chance to practice them with him. He liked the idea so much he agreed and then asked us if we'd be interested in backing him in his concert on Friday!!!! We liked that idea! The only other noteworthy thing about this conversation was the fact that 3 of the 4 of us were treading water in the hotel swimming pool at the time... It was quite surreal :)

Peter's concert was very enjoyable and when we were called on stage (insert tuning up and gear set up here) Peter started an audience inspired vocalese that we joined and it was a blast!!!! We backed him on Which Witch which requires great concentration and dedication from me. My contribution is 7 parts of varied bass note and assorted treble notes from the "Chord of Dm" lol it is a gas! Gig Street is a personal favorite of mine. In We're Not Koi I normally sing lead but as it WAS Peter's concert, I graciously pasted it over to him lol. He did a great job and we had fun supporting him. My only source of disappointment was the lack of "Barfy the Hedgehog" but then, I strove to overcome this pain.

judifilksign's GOH concert consisted of a We're Not Koi set and a special guests perform while Judi sign's set. I think our part worked well. The contata audience was very supportive and warm and welcoming and that really helps when you suffer from horrible stage fright. I was fine during our "back up for Peter" concert but when we started ours it hit with vengeance. Oh well... managed to find most of my voice and a few guitar chords :) The harmony potential at Contata this year was frightening. At one point in our concert we thought -- GEE the sound guys really have something special happening, we sound very full! Then we realized that was because about 3/4 of the audience was singing harmonies along with us. Judi had had asked that I sing Daniel Glasser's Close Your Eyes for the close of her concert. I think she just likes eating all that imaginary redacted cake. I love watching her sign that song when I sing lol...

Our Interfilk Guests, Pavlov's Duck were wonderful!!!! The voices are sweet and clear, the songs are woven skillfully and I was impressed with the both the guitar and keyboard playing. They did us proud and I'm soo happy they were able to come.

Tom Smith's Rocky Muppet Show was spectacularly unique lol... Everyone did a great job of their muppety role and special very special props go out to Paul Estin as "Miss Piggy" Oh my good gosh!!!!!!!

Ben Newman's "A Walk in The Day" was performed. I had the pleasure of seeing it for the first time at Conflikt in Seattle this past January when he attended as Interfilk Guest and seeing it again with a cast that was very different was again enjoyable. Ben -- you are one talented guy! Shawna foxipherwas amazing in her role -- she has made it her own. More amazing still was watching her write music for that universe. We were wondering what she was writing in circle and then she performed it at that rotten apple filk Sunday night. Oh my that gal can write and sing!!!!!!!!

We missed some parts of one-shots and concerts due to scheduling conflicts but caught almost everything at least in part.

The listener Concert that Deb Wonder put together had many songs I've never personally heard before and I really appreciated the chance to hear them. She has a dab hand at choosing good music!!!
Piers "Library" song was stunning!!!!! Oh my... great voice and a song in the folk tradition was a social point. yay

Tom Smith was a wonderful Toastmaster -- the con had found him a couple of very comfy looking leather armchairs (one on and one offstage) and he looked truely majestic surveying his minions :) Tom and Judi are a dangerous duo on stage in any circumstance. At one point we were terrified that she was going to explode in a cloud of ASL electricity as she bounced down the ramp... Tom is "an influence" lol

The interfilk voice and silent auctions were well attended and well donated and we thank those that participated. Persis did Yeoman duty and D and I helped as we could. Wenching is part of the help. One of my major contributions was bidding on "Count Spatula"'s truffles... and we sacrificed ourselves to demonstrate the truly wicked wonderful goodness of the truffles. It was a group demonstration with sound effects and finger licking and chocolategasms. Oh, yes and Yes I did win that auction :) wenching and bidding is always an entertaining dichotomy.

We met many new and talented people and heard many new songs. Jack give me sheet music for 2 lullabies he had written then played them for me on Saturday night in circle -- lovely songs -- well done Jack!!

The song contest had many very good entries. Congratulations to the winners and a sincere thank you to all the participants that entered SONGS. Time well spent !!!!!

I finally got to meet Roberta Rogow. When I first joined filk circles in the 80's it was her books, Lee Gold's and Elf Quest song books that I found. I am happy to confirm that Roberta is still filking up a storm, has new recordings and new fiction to buy. and... she'll be at Worldcon (just sayin)

Sound guys --- Spencer, Joe, Harold - your work is very very appreciated. We did not suck and you made that possible!!!! A special thank you to Harold and everyone who made a special effort to make room in the rotten apple filk for the 3 of us and our guitar garage and my massive dulcimer stand and and and. We really appreciated it as I was ready to run out of the room and curl up under the bed. Thanks to fuzzyvanman who loaned me his portable 500lb keyboard stand so that I had a dulcimer stand to use. We realized that if 3 of my braincells had rubbed together we could/should have offered that to setup crew for YOUR keyboard for the concerts -- sorry!!! since I use it as a dulcimer stand I forgot it's actual use (weak giggle)

I enjoyed my interactions with concom, You folks were helpful and friendly and really did make us feel very welcome. This was my first Contata but I'm sure it will not be my last.

Merav it was good to be at your con -- I enjoyed singing with you! Joshua, thanks for the support and friendship and harping -- all priceless. museinred it was wonderful seeing you again and thank you for your work on behalf of filkers. Everyone else -- thank you for a great weekend :)

We dropped D (SFO) and Shawna (SEA) off at Newark Airport and Judi and I had an uneventful but chatty drive back to Columbus.

See above re wired and caffeine etc.. I'm sure I've forgotten lots of things and lots of people and it's not because I didn't love meeting you and listening to you, it's because my brain cells are going oooh shiny -- ummm meds -- glucose levels ummmmm....

contata, we, filking, filk con
