and life goes on

The viewing and funeral both went well. Many from the filk community came out to support R and her family and R's cousin from Virginia was able to come and pay respects also.

This newfangled technology has uses. The funeral home put a grouping of about 50 pictures, scanned by M into a dvd presentation. It made a really nice collection of memories of Mary.

Open casket is not for all but it does allow those that need to have the concrete proof of passing to fulfill that need. The service today was brief and meaningful. The chaplain worked at Friendship Village, the health centre in which Mary had lived for the past few years. She had known her so the eulogy reflected Mary's feisty nature and her focus on her one big achievement, R. Like many parents of her generation Mary was not one to praise R in person. She did however make it very clear to everyone else that she was intensely proud of her daughter and loved her very much. R's cousin Betty was struck by the love and support gathered around R now. I think this is the best testament to Mary's life and accomplishments, she has created a wonderful legacy in her daughter...

The chaplain, Faith, read a poem about remembering Mother. As an archetype it was very touching. I was glad I'd decided to play an instrumental instead of trying to sing. I don't sing well when I'm crying...

After the service graveside, we withdrew to Em's for refreshments and visiting of a less fraught nature. D returned to work and our lives continue.
