Tomorrow is the last day of voting for the UCSA exec/government elections. I guess I will see how effective my sneaky "vote for cheap beer" campaign promise turns out to be. Ah well, at least I know a few folks tossed my name in the hat, and hell, to be honest the only reason I am in this game is for the three thousand samoleons that I get if I get in.
In other news, signs of spring are showing up amongst the bare trees, and with the warmer weather comes good news. My plan to build a small sailboat, which was thwarted by the tiny garage and lack of yard of any kind at my current flat, has been given a new lease. Marissa has given me the green light to construct the boat in her back yard, and Andrew has hooked me up with access to his carpentry tools. In addition to the space and tools, I have at least four people who jumped at the chance to help build a boat, which given normal project-enthusiasm attrition ratios means that I will have one or two folks who are still keen by the time the weather gets continually rain-free enough for me to begin on this in earnest.
Whenever I think about building a boat, I always remember the thing that Bakke and I built that somewhat resembled a boat. The PVC piping frame, the shoplifted epoxy, the black garden material we used for a hull are all still clear in the minds eye. As is the horrendous scent of drying epoxy, and the spectacle of a leaky black "boat" being launched in the pool in the back yard. With no keel to hold her steady, and a thousand and one engineering faults, the poor black beast floundered and sunk within minutes.
The hope is that with a proper plan from a reputable boat builder(already sourced), the proper materials, the right tools, and two or three people working on it, this attempt at creating a boat will succeed for all the reasons that the "boat" we built 12 years ago failed so miserably.
Other than that, I've been kinda busy lately, all kinds of things to do and type for school, projects and presentations and the like. Then the whole paintball training thing as well has been soaking up spare time like nobodies business. Then there is this talk I have at the philosophers conference in september I have to brush up a little, and the trip to wellington to check out the world of wearable art at the end of next month as well. The thesis still demands more books to be read, and I have to flesh out a whole section of argument before the next meeting with the supes. Basically, from now till the end of september is going to be pretty damned busy.
I still have this ridiculous mustache, the extent of which is demonstrated in the publicity shot in the post below.
Tonight was a birthday dinner for Mom, went to the lonestar and had the big plate 'o ribs, had a fine time talking with the Tusk, Kim and Mike. Happy birthday again Momster.
Anyways, I think it is about time I crashed out.
Hope all is well for all you out there in internet land.
