OOC: The Second Dream

May 01, 2010 11:23

Things lost:
-All memories of the fire and approximately a week afterward (since he survived and stayed at the clinic to treat patients after, the memories of treating burns/smoke inhalation would be a huge clue about what happened and render forgetting the fire itself moot). This will leave a big gap in his memories, but every time he tries to think about it too hard or hears/reads someone mentioning the fire, he'll feel the usual side effects- hearing static, blurred vision and so on.
-He will also not remember making the entry that got mantis-chan sent after him, nor dying.

[The staticed-out names are "Shepherd" and "Kaylee".]

The sounds of laughter, including his own, echoed in his ears as the room faded into focus. He was sitting beside his sister at a well-worn wooden table, an empty plate with the remnants of a meal before him, surrounded by people- Inara and Mal, whom he knew- and several others he didn't, including the goateed man he'd seen and heard in two of his memories; the brown-haired girl, blond-haired man, and dark-skinned woman he'd glimpsed briefly in his first one; and another one he'd never seen, an older man with a mustache and gray hair tied back in a short ponytail. The laughter had died down, but everyone surrounding him still seemed to be happy.

"I like an easy, langorous journey," Mal was saying.

"Oh, gee, I wonder what that would be like?" the girl wondered, getting up and beginning to clear the table.

"Let me help you with that," said Simon, beginning to rise, but she stopped him.

"It's your turn," she told him cheerily.

"My turn...?" Simon asked, confused.

"Well, [static] told a funny story about bein' a preacher- now you tell a funny story about being a doctor."

"Oh, a funny story?" Simon asked, smiling slightly, thinking.

"Yeah, 'cause sick people are high-larious," said the goateed man sarcastically.

"Well, they- they can be," said Simon. "In fact, I remember this time- I was working in the ER, and this, uh, this, this fellow, you know, upright sort of citizen comes in, and he's complaining about-"

"Now, Inara- she's gotta have some funny whorin' stories, I'd wager," the goateed man interrupted him.

"OH! Do I ever!" Inara exclaimed, a chuckle in her voice. "Funny and sexy, you have no idea..." Her tone then dropped flat. "And you never will. I don't discuss my clients." The others resumed their chuckling.

"Awww, come on, Inara, who'd know?" he demanded.

"You," said Inara. "A Companion doesn't kiss and tell."

"So there is kissin'?" Mal smiled over the top of his drink, and Inara shot him a sour look.

"Hey, Doc," said the woman suddenly, "I think [static] may need your help after all..." Simon, surprised, turned to see the brown-haired girl carrying a lopsided cake with mismatched lit candles atop it.

"Care to make the first incision, Dr. Tam?" she grinned.

"Happy birthday, Simon!" everyone chorused.
