bringing back the literacy.

So, today I have finished The Corrections which pretty much took me this whole summer to finish. It didn't really interest me until I was about half way through. It's by Jonathan Franzen and all the critics loved it; it won some award. The author is from Webster Groves, which if you don't know, is a suburb of St. Louis. The book is about a family and basically the dad has some sort of dementia. In real life Franzen's dad had Alzheimer's, a form of dementia, and actually participated in the research that I do the data entry for right now. Anyway, the family, or really the parents live in St. Jude, and the kids are all grown up, though they grew up in St. Jude. What bothers me so much about this, is the fact that St. Jude is clearly supposed to be St. Louis. One probably wouldn't recognize the similarities unless one were familiar with St. Louis, but it was just weird because he used other non-fictional cities in the story, such as Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago. So, I don't know, it was just weird.

Anyway, the point of this post was also to list the books that I can remember that I've read this year, just because I'm curious and I want to keep track of what I've read from now on. And also I guess if anyone is interested in reading anything I've read I can most certainly give you opinions. Oh and btw these books are listed in the order of when I started them.

Memories of My Melancholy Whores, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Devil in the White City, Erik Larson
The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen
A Million Little Pieces, James Frey
The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera
Shopgirl, Steve Martin

And sadly I think that's it... (there maybe one or two from earlier this year that I'm forgetting) these are all starting with January, and I would also like to point out that for the better part of this year I was in school. Which is an awful excuse, but whatever, with all the reading done for classes, there's little time left to read for pleasure. Anyway, I think my next read will be Confessions of a Shopaholic, which as I mentioned before my mom recommended to me. And I need a break from heavier/longer books. Ok, ciao tutti.
