For a class on short stories we had to read two from Borges's Ficciones, so I got a copy from the library. The copyright is 1956 and this, the seventh printing, is from 1966, and the book itself is falling apart. I'm a little afraid to put it in my bag because I don't want it to break more, so I usually carry it in my hand. The edges of the pages are rough and all uneven. While I have it checked out I've been reading other stories than the ones we had to, for fun. Rereading, really, because I read the whole book a year ago, though in English.
Yesterday I was reading "El milagro secreto", which wasn't assigned, and found that the tops of two pairs of pages were connected, though perforated. I realized that all of the pages had probably been like this at first, which was why the edges were rough. I broke them apart as I needed to to keep reading.
I guess someone could have read the story by holding the pages far apart and peering between them. But I don't think so. I think I was the first person to read that story in that book.
