A while ago, it occurred to me that when installing a phone system, there is often a big ol' pile o' scrap wire. Which we regularly throw away. And that people steal wire from abandoned buildings to sell it for scrap.
So I grabbed a sample of scrap wire and took it to a scrap metals dealer. 40¢/lb, he says.
That's not a lot, but free money is in fact free so since then I've been collecting the scrap. Today I took it to him. 16lbs. Turns out the price varies a bit. Today he was paying 35¢, so I left with $5.60
He also pays 50¢/lb for Al, but that's a whole lotta cans. I may or may not decide that's worth my time and effort. I may just sort of collect them in a desultory manner and only bring them to him when I'm bringing in wire anyway.
Since a lot of his cash business is in fact cans at 50¢/lb, his change drawer is stocked with 50¢ pieces. He paid me with a $5 bill, a 50¢ piece, and a dime.
