Help me choose glasses!

Jan 25, 2009 13:32

I got my eyes examined last week. My distance vision is worse again. And also, I'm having trouble seeing fine detail on close up things through my glasses. So doing soldering, or reading fine print, or some of the wiring things I do for work, I need to take my glasses off. All of which means I should be thinking about...(ready?)...Bifocals!

But the bifocal adjustment is so weak the doc said it'd probably be a toss-up whether I'd be happier taking the glasses off for close work or getting the bifocals and losing a piece of my field of view. He was assuming I would be paying normal prices for glasses. which I don't do. So.

I'm thinking about getting these as sunglasses:

They fold in half at the bridge; I figure they'll fold up small and be easier to carry around than clip-ons. Single-vision; I'd mostly be using them for driving, and I do very little close work while driving.

Last year, I got a second pair of glasses as a backup, because the main pair I bought were light and airy and I thought they might break. The backups ended up looking very girly on my girly face. But the airy main glasses have been very sturdy, so that worked out; I just never wore them. But I still think I should have at least two pairs.
I'm thinking about these as the backups:

They're very similar to my current main glasses, except half-frame instead of rimless, and hinged instead of hingeless.

For the bifocals:

They're memory alloy; more or less just like the backups only a little larger lenses to fit the bifocal bit.

Which just leaves the everyday glasses. No idea. I'm sort of leaning toward these:

Basically square and rimless like I have now, but with hinges.

But every time I look I choose something different; if any of you have any suggestions from that site (for any of these 4 pairs; or for the idea of fewer pairs of glasses (or more pairs), let me know!
