They like me! They really like me!
Last night was the annual Windy City Rollers awards party, the Black And Blue Ball.
There are a lot of awards.
Each of the five teams (the four league teams and the all-stars) votes on their best pivot, jammer, blocker and MVP. The league as a whole does the same for the whole league.
There are about 5 more awards that anyone might win; things like the Leo Seltzer award, which is given to the person who is voted as doing the most to promote derby as a whole (as opposed to our league) in the wide world.
And the league team who won our league championship (The Ivy King Cup) is showered with praise and gets championship rings, etc (this year, the Hell's Belles, who never lost a game last season, which has never happened in the history of our league).
I'm not eligible for any of those, really. I mean, I theoretically could win the Best Ass award, but my ass (even though I'm told it is nice) can't compete with the ass of the player who wins that award every year. yow. But I digress.
The only award I am explicitly on the table for is "Best Support Staff."
That honor has gone to the same people every year since the league started: Mama and Papa Doc Vendetta.
The Vendettas are a doctor and nurse, parents of one of our players. They come to most practices, all games, travel with the team...They are the core of our med staff. Papa Doc wrote the book on derby medicine. I mean literally; there is a book on derby injuries and how to treat them, and he wrote it. He is awesome. They both are.
This year, there was a tie: Mama and Papa, and me.
