Hidden CPAP hazards

Jul 14, 2008 07:58

Urgh.
Last night, I had some buffalo wings. Maybe a couple too many, in fact.
Anyway, I went to bed, put on the mask, and went to sleep.
A few hours later I woke up coughing and choking and feeling like I was dying.

What happened, as near as I can tell, is this:

Sometimes, when you eat too much, or something a bit spicy, you get will later get a tiny bit of acid reflux. I know I do.
Generally if that happened while you were asleep you might swallow it back down and keep sleeping.
But the CPAP interfered with that. Instead, it force-aspirated that little bit of stomach acid down my windpipe around 4:30.
Whereupon I woke up, choking and gagging and coughing, with my throat on fire and the rest of my mouth too dry to swallow.

I got back to sleep about 5:45 and slept till 7:25

cpap, gross
