Supernatural - Gen (14 Recs)

Skin: Coda by
jinx37kat - this is a great look at Sam’s reaction to dealing with the shapeshifter and the things he says while they’re in the sewers. Did Dean really feel that way? Jealous? A freak? Alone? Sam was convinced that the first two probably didn’t apply. And if they did, they were so small on the radar that they probably didn’t even register.

Shadows and Sunshineland by
scribblinlenore - Post Asylum story that is so freaking brilliantly done that I probably couldn’t rec it properly. Not only do the boys deal with their issues to an extent, but there is an intriguing plot line that forces the issue. Dean's hands curled into fists. This was the problem with trying to pretend nothing was wrong when your brother had shot you in the chest three times. It had a tendency to back up on you, bitterly.

Midnight Clear by
beanside - It’s a christmas fic and the author calls it schmoopy, but I enjoyed it a great deal and every once and awhile it’s nice to take a break from the brotherly angst. “Not always. But there was that one year, where dad stacked the beer cans up like a tree and put candles in some of the holes. That was nice. He left us presents under it.”

Cars by
marinarusalka - How Dean came to drive the Impala after getting his first car. I so love the family dynamic on this show and the author does a great job of showing that in this story. It was a game. They'd been having different versions of the same conversation for nearly six months now, ever since Dad had said that Dean could have a car once he got his license, provided he paid for the gas and insurance himself. Since then, Dean spent his afternoons pumping gas at a service station near the high school, his weekends helping out at the garage where Dad worked, and his remaining shreds of free time combing through the classifieds, finding an endless supply of impractical cars for Sam to shoot down. Sam wasn't quite sure what the point was -- Dean knew perfectly well he wasn't going to get a sports car, and Sam suspected he didn't really want one anyway -- but Dean never seemed to tire of the routine.

Family Matters by
winterlive - a series of ficlets that together form an interesting look at the Winchester family, especially Sam’s relationships with his family. Dean paused again, just a little surprised. Sammy'd never shown him this much affection, not even when they were training together. He was kind of a weird kid, but... hunting made bonds, he guessed. Like Dad said - you see battle with a man, you're like his brother. I guess it works for real brothers, too.

Untitled 76 by
_cee - Both the brothers need some recovery time. The thing I love about this fic is the obvious affection between the brothers in a manner that doesn’t ruin them. Sam may never really sleep but Dean never really rests, and Sam thinks that it will be ironic if they die not in the line of fire but when Dean nods off and puts the car under a semi. Sam thinks it would break Dean's heart if it ended that way, and then Sam thinks that haunting I-80 in Utah for all of eternity would be something beyond ironic. Possibly justice.

The Silences In Between by
catalects - Moments in Sam and Dean’s lives from when they were young until the future. It’s beautifully written and seems to echo the brothers’ personalities and inability to really say what they think. He knew he should say that they were okay (because it was true) and that they didn't need Sam (because that could have been true), and he didn't know what kind of brother it made him that he couldn't say either of those things. He just nodded, and gave a short wave out the window, and he didn't hit the accelerator until he saw Sam lift his hand in response.

Just A Little Lullaby by
joyfulgirl41 - If you’re active at all in SPN fandom, you’ve probably already read this gem, but I can’t *not* rec it. It’s beautiful and painful and true to who the brothers are. Things were different after that night. Dean was gone and Sam didn't know that he'd ever see him again. Was convinced, in fact, that he wouldn't. Sam stopped talking to people when he didn't have to, would sometimes go for weeks without saying a word.

They Say It’s Wonderful by
trollprincess - It’s a read that you have to pay attention to otherwise you’ll get confused, told in past and present snapshots of what could’ve happened if Mary wasn’t the only victim that night. Very interesting, especially to see how the brotherly relationship plays out. The Impala almost quivers in response, even though Dean doesn't flinch and the car's steering wheel remains still under Dean's one-handed grasp. His knuckles grow white as his fingers tighten on the wheel, and later on, when he's still not speaking to me, I'll wonder what the hell is wrong with me.

Atonement by
halfshellvenus - Post Asylum fic where Sam wants to make up for what happened. I have a so much love for brotherly bonding/love (without the incest - just can’t get into most of it) and this story delivers with a whallop. Sam got the first aid kit from the top of the battered dresser, and sat down next to Dean, trying not to jar him too much. He reached over and began unbuttoning Dean’s shirt, and Dean’s eyes half-opened. “I’ll take care of it,” he said. “I don’t need to be babied, Sammy.” “This isn’t babying, Dean,” Sam said. He finished opening the shirt, and surveyed the damage. “This is… making reparations,” he said.

Written In Dreams by
maygra - One of the best stories in this fandom I’ve read thus far. The Sam voice in this story is freaking amazing. . Sam had been old enough to realize then, that he and his brother, as close as they were, were as different as any two people could be and would never, ever, see the world exactly the same.

Searching for the Truth by
dragonsinger - It’s John and Missouri and the Missouri voice is spot on. Excellent read as John searches for answers after Mary’s death. “John Winchester, you gonna sit there all day or do I have to carry you in here myself?” she asked.

I Don’t Have the Words by Nobdyptclr - Don’t let the fanfiction.net address fool ya, this is a good story set Post Asylum. It’s a short one with angst and a little bit of fluff and ends PERFECTLY for the brothers. “Don’t turn this into a chick-flick moment, for god’s sake.” The older Winchester managed to spit the words out through his clenched teeth. He still did not turn around, but Sam could clearly hear the pain in his voice and read it in the lines of his body.

All Wrapped Up by Ridley C. James - Again, overlook the fanfiction.net address because this is an interesting example of the life the boys had based around an argument over Sam’s letter to Santa. Highly enjoyable and bittersweet. One good thing about the Holidays that Dean had discovered was the convenient bargaining chip that Jolly Old St. Nick made. He could get Sam to do almost anything he wanted from Halloween on just by threatening a quick call to the chubby guy. It was amazing, and sad that the Easter Bunny didn’t have the same intimidation factor. Unfortunately, tonight, his tactic seemed to backfire and the crying increased and grew louder.
