Remix Redux V - 9 Recs

Apr 26, 2007 16:20

Before Steph kills me. remix_redux went live last weekend and while I'm nowhere near done, here are the first of my recs. Right now authors are not listed, but I'll add them when they become available. As always, if you like a story, leave feedback for the author.

Remix Redux V (9 Recs)

1. it's in those moments (the "my kind of girl" remix) - Supernatural, Post Bloody Mary - This was written based on my story and it’s amazing. It’s a look at Sam in the present and past, missing Dean and missing Jessica. Mostly though, I just love the voices here and the fact that Dean wants to know about Jessica simply because she matters to Sam. The author calls it “slightly wincesty” but I honestly didn’t see it. Sam stutters awake, jerking out of his nightmare with a breath that feels like a robbery. One hand flies to his forehead, fingers skittering across the skin above his eyebrow. The drop of Jessica's blood is long gone, though. It was months ago. Sam had been nearly catatonic that night, wrapped in a blanket outside his burning home, and Dean had pulled his sleeve over his hand, scrubbed at the darkening spot on Sam's forehead until it was invisible.

2. Sunday Undies (a clipping from The Atlantis Star) - Stargate Atlantis/Sex & the City - This isn’t a crossover in the normal sense, but it makes it easier to understand the narrative style if you at least are familiar with Sex and the City. Laura Cadman dishes on the interesting sex stories in the Pegasus galaxy. Funny and I really loved the narrator’s voice. The answer to that question came, surprisingly, not after a hot date with a certain doctor, but Tuesday in the mess where I was bonding with my girlfriends over corn muffins and those pink ice drinks the quartermaster insists on calling Cosmopolitans.

3. Lessons In Time (A Nine Months Ago Remix) - Dark Angel - While Max is interviewed, Logan realizes a few things. I love the look at how Alec has changed since he appeared. But what I love the most is the Max voice in this. "What's this for, again?" Max was weary of this little interview already. Logan watched her eyes dart around, looking for some chore to get her out of it, he smirked to himself. Lord knows where the kid had scrounged up a video camera from.

4. Real Men Wear Tights (The Heart-to-Heart Remix) - Farscape, Post Peacekeeper Wars - John shares a story with his son about an adventure he shared with his namesake. The characters are perfect in this - it’s the John Crichton that I fell madly in love with on the show - and I love the idea of D’Argo learning all these things about his father. John knows his face is doing a slow burn to red, but he's powerless to stop it. He thinks that his son is probably enjoying the show and a sidelong glance at D'Argo confirms his suspicion. The kid is staring at him with his mother's eyes, appraisal and mockery standing shoulder to shoulder, his mouth quirking up slightly at the corner. John figures it was just a matter of time before the boy started asking the hard questions. Leave it to Chiana to start the ball rolling.

5. Never Trust a Dog to Watch Your Food (Give Me the Chocolate and Nobody Gets Hurt Remix) - Farscape, Post Terra Firma - An interesting look at the things that Rygel enjoys about Earth. Rygel rocks in this. As usual, the others ignore him or forget about him - for all they noticed or cared, he might as well be thousands of metras above on board Moya rather than sitting on an ugly striped couch in this squalid, what did Crichton call it? Oh yes, flophouse.

6. Running by Your Side (The Promises We Made remix) - Supernatural - When Dean is hurt, Sam remembers all the ways that Dean has always been there for him. This story is just amazing. I love how Sam would do anything to keep Dean with him because really, it’s true, Dean is Sam’s anchor and without him, I’m not sure what would be left. Can’t recommend enough. Dean doesn't wake up for three days. Sam always thinks he remembers how terror feels, how it makes breathing difficult and his heart sluggish and heavy in his chest, but he never does, not until he sees Dean laid out and helpless again, a breath away from not being Sam's anymore.

7. The Chemicals Between Us (Oxygen Remix) - Supernatural, Post Hunted, Sam/Dean - Not only is this an amazing story, but it’s truly a clever remix, using a few lines to bring it back to the original story and yet making this all his/her own. I love Sam’s need for more from his brother once he realizes what he wants. And it’s really hot - who knew a guy shaving another guy’s head would be so damn hot? In Texas, Sam learns how his brother's skin tastes when the sun has beaten down on him all day, a hint of summer and a lot of lotion, salt and sweat and Dean. He learns that his fingers leave bruises on Sam's shoulders, bruises Sam would like to memorise, maybe copy down, symbols he can use to counter the dark and the fear.

8. In the Sound a Thought (Where the Sea Meets the Land) - Supernatural, Sam/Dean - This story is just so amazing and sweet. I love the voices for the boys, but mostly, I love the whole loving feel of it, without it ever being uttered. It’s all in their actions toward one another - how much they care. A few typos/errors, but this is a great story. Dean grabs one of the bags and follows Sam into their tiny room. There are palm trees on the walls and seagulls on the comforters, but the room is dark and stuffy, dusty blinds blocking out the sunlight and their dirty clothes scattered all around. Dean gets the feeling he's being played like a fucking piano. Sam's obsession with fresh ocean air is bad enough, but now he's pretty sure the motel is secretly in on it as well.

9. Alone I Fear the Tide (Wash These Dreams Away) - Supernatural, Post In My Time of Dying - Dean knows that Sam is worrying about him while Dean tries to get his head together. I love the relationship between the boys here. I love the case and how it relates to their own issues. Great stuff. When Sam left (even before Sam left, when Dean knew it was coming, a point on the horizon he could never pick up enough speed to escape), Dean tasted ashes on his tongue. He knew it was stupid, tried to pretend it wasn't true, but all the hunting he'd done had never been as terrifying as Sam packing up and not looking back, going where they couldn't protect him, and fear has always tasted like smoke, felt like fire, to Dean.

dark angel, hunted, farscape, pairing: sam/dean, bloody mary, spn pre-series, stargate atlantis, remix, in my time of dying, supernatural
