Neglected fandom: Original Slash

Jul 26, 2006 23:44

Today I'm going to rec Original Slash. These are stories written with original characters using slash sensibilities. They draw from the styles we write in fandom and tell stories about boys falling in love. They're more like RPS than gay-erotica. And most of the writers write fic in different fandoms as well.

Ann Somerville (logophilos was probably my gateway drug into the stories. She writes epic novels set in an original universe, Periter, where some people have a gene which gives them paranormal abilities but also makes them infertile. Her stories are all found Here.

Kei's Gift (NC17) is the first story I read and it's long but quite meaty. There's a plot with abductions, war, culture clash and falling in love. The main characters Kei and Arman develop a relationship through the story despite their obvious differences that's equal and loving. And most importantly there are well written, contextual sex scenes.

Time Out (NC17) is one of her original stories set in the modern world and it's about a Nurse and his Dom. I'm adding this as a rec because if you don't mind BDSM in your fic this is one of the best I've read. It's a great understanding of how the actual relationship works rather than just the act of bondage and submission.

Parhelion is another writer who has many stories that I've enjoyed reading. Diary of a Maddened Scientist (MA) is a short romance written through a series of Labatory Journal Entries. Dr T. B_____ acquires a new lab assistant, P. who subtly changes his life.
June 15
…Dr. H________ visited today, and discoursed at some length upon the flaws in my experimental design. This might have been of some use if he had any comprehension of the implications of my theoretical work and the constraints it imposes upon our initial conditions. As H________ left, P. stuck his tongue out at the Doctor’s retreating back. I should have reproved him, but I can not help admitting that I concurred with his opinion.

The Devil and Cowboy Will (NC17) starts a series set in 1930's Hollywood following a variety of characters in the Studio system. Will becomes a bit part actor after his father dies and his uncle finds him a job in Hollywood. Here he meets Nigel Cole, the resident "Creep" (Villain) and when Nigel gets injured by the man who has a crush on the Leading Lady, Will becomes his personal assistant. The story is told in first person with quite a unique voice which is carried all the way through and the romance itself is nicely paced with the characters getting to know and grow to care about each other.
In the next several months, I got to say “Howdy” a lot, which did unfortunate things to my vocabulary that have lasted until this present day and made me feel like a consarned fool to boot. I also learned how to say “Ahoy,” “Ugh,” and “Shaddup, yoose.” Still, there were some advantages to my rising to the level of a snake’s belly in the studio system. To start with, there were girls. And next, there were girls. Oh, and when you were done, there were even more girls. Not, you understand, that I made huge amounts of time. Most of the beauties, which were about all of them, were saving themselves either for marriage or a really influential studio executive, whichever came first.

Parhelion also wrote Masks which is a story set in a world where occult heroes take on the bad guys. Jeff and Rusty, best friends since school, adjust to Jeff's alter ego The Revenant. This story is one of my favourite Original Stories because its got a great sense of Pulp blended with superheroes and characters that care about each other.

Untitled Snogging Emo Boys Fic (NC17) by Darling Sparkle (bexless) is a cute story about two Emo highschool boys who kiss for two minutes on camera as a dare. It's nice and hot and just all good.
All of which basically means - James can’t go home. Not until the window starts filtering grey into the room, and that won’t be for hours and if James could just get to *sleep* it might be okay but he can’t, not with Aaron lying next to him and the imprint of Aaron’s mouth still heavy on James’ lips.

Pathfinder(NC17) by Rushlight is a novel length story about Shai who is genetically modified to be a complex psychic in a distopic far future. He needs to be bonded to a "Guide" to function properly and this is the story of the competition for his power. It's got a very well realised world, character development and an ending that leaves you satisfied. There are warnings on the header page for 16-year old and non-consensual sex.
Night fell across the city with the weight of a wet blanket, heavy and clinging and near suffocating in its inevitability. It peeled away the illusion of innocence that camouflaged Nhil-Rhar during the day, coming to life with the lurid shine of neon lights and raucous laughter and the hot press of bodies vying to pursue whatever transient pleasures gave their tawdry lives meaning for the brief span of time between sunset and sunrise.

Shutterbug (PG13) by Octune/occupiedneptune tells the story of Sebastian Carlow who is a photographer who is down on his luck until the perfect model drops into his lap. It's a cute story with a great pacing to it and a kind of sweetness, too.
It was early morning by the time Sebastian returned from the bar, dejected, soaking wet after encountering a cloud burst on the walk home, and very, very drunk. Three minutes were spent unlocking the door - then another two remembering he'd left the keys in the door - before he stumbled into the loft, tripping over a groove in the hardwood and knocking over the coat stand with a crash. Drunk was, he thought, the only way to be when one was low on funds and out of ideas. Passed out was good, too, he noted before collapsing into bed fully clothed.

When You Are Out There on the Road(PG) by Ephemera(ephemera_tales) is a college story where two best mates, Sam and Beck, get together after Beck breaks up with his boyfriend. This is just a nice story that covers a lot with really believable characters in a fairly short space.
You gotta understand, Beck? He'd been singing this guy, Robbie's, praises since day one. He had, like, a framed photo on his desk in our room, and snapshots in his wallet, and he talked about Robbie like the guy had just stepped down off the medal rostrum after he'd got given the Nobel Peace Prize or something. They'd been together forever. They ended up long distance, but, like, they talked on the phone all the time, and I know Beck had turned down some serious offers 'cos him and Robbie were, you know, committed and shit. Hell - I'd lain awake nights wishing that maybe, one day, I'd have something like that. Since I had picked up this call, I had started to really rethink that!

Kaethe writes Giving the Devil His Due(PG) a short urban fantasy story that combines Celtic myth into a modern setting. It's a destined to be together story that is one of my favourite pieces of short original slash. The characters are great, the world and the history of the characters is all fantastic.
As Finn thanked her, he felt a strangely familiar sensation on the back of his neck, like someone was watching him. The feeling had been with him for days now, growing steadily stronger as he narrowed in on its source. He knew he was close but hadn't expected to find what he was looking for in the very motel he stopped at for the night.
