The Things We’ve Lost by
tinamishi - This story is a wonderful look at Dean as he tries to let go after Sam leaves for Stanford. It’s painful and amazing, the way good angst fic should be. Dad never asked how Sam was or if Dean even heard from him, but he drank a whole lot more than he ever had and Dean pretended like he didn't notice.

Gumboots (If That’s the Way It’s Going to Be) by
strippedhalo - Dean might have a power of his own, though it doesn’t seem very useful right then. This is just a happy, fun read. Not enough of these in this fandom. "No, like... glowing. Like a, a... look!" Sam took two steps forward and grabbed Dean's arm, pulling it out in front of him so Dean could see the faint golden light emanating from his hand and the bit of wrist not covered by his jacket sleeve.
3.
Now I Live in the Shadows by
lunarknightz - A future fic where you find out just how much Dean will sacrifice for Sam. Loved it. He’s not a hero, he’s a guy who walks through hell each day, and manages to come out the other side each time. He keeps going, like the freaking Energizer Bunny.
4.
Stronger than His Father by
carmendove - John/Mary - John POV from the day Dean is born. It’s a bittersweet piece, considering we know how it turns out, but it’s a nice moment. As long as she was beside him, he felt invincible. And as long as he was alive, nothing bad would ever touch her...or their son.
5.
John Wayne’s Last Hurrah (or Dean Down the Rabbit Hole) by
witchofthedogs - Dean’s gotten himself in a jam and he thinks about all the ways Sam needs him, his father needs him, and how much he misses his mother. It’s wonderful. “I just don’t know what to do, you know. He’s just so lost. He’s kinda like...” You. But even in the darkness, he couldn’t bring himself to say it, to tell his father his deepest fear.

Every Mile Is Two by
curtain__call- Supernatural - Sam and Dean miss each other when Sam decides to go back to school. It’s a nice look at the relationship between the boys, but I’ve got to warn that the end takes a very depressing turn. It’s good, but some people don’t like that much depressing - yet for some reason, I *love* it. It’s been four weeks, five if you count the one he can’t remember (for various reasons he doesn’t care to disclose) since Sam left. In a bar in Philly, Sam told him he was leaving in the morning so Dean ordered another drink. Philadelphia - the City of Brotherly Love. Of all the places to leave him in, Sam picks that one. Dean just marks it off his lists of places he never wants to go to again. That list is getting pretty damn long, as a matter of fact.

Second Chances by
fyrmaiden - Spoilers through Route 666 - Dean tries to deal with his own feelings on faith, the promises he’s made, and what his future might bring. I love introspective Dean pieces and this one doesn’t fail to deliver. Dean’s never been the praying kind, but he does try to keep his promises. Hasn’t been so hot at that recently, though. He’s made himself a lot of promises that he just can’t seem to keep.

Wednesdays by
pixel_0 - Post Shadows - This story is painful. Really painful as Sam tries to come to terms with Dean’s death and letting him go. Not the story for you if you don’t like character deaths, but it’s a potent piece, worthy of reading. Sam refuses to leave their room until a new month of calloused ice and resilient snow begins, and the days are no longer all Wednesdays.
9.
I’m Already There by Joou Himeko Dah - Post Shadows - Sam wants to explain what he meant during his conversation with Dean, Dean gets hurt, and both of them have to face the road ahead. A lot of angst, but it has a hopeful ending (as hopeful as this show gets.) He relaxed inwardly, having lived the last half an hour on pins and needles, uncertain if he had managed to get Dean here in time-- flashing unhappily to a time not too long before-- when he had been told there was no hope, he would soon be alone on this quest... brotherless... anchorless...

How to Fix Things by
trollprincess - Supernatural/Grey’s Anatomy - Denny Duquette and John Winchester are the same guy…sort of. It’s a really interesting look into John’s psyche via another personality he establishes while battling illness. But Dean will know, because Dean always knows when it comes to you, and you vanish from his side so fast you might have left skid marks.
**Enjoy! And as always, if you like the story, take a minute to let the author know!
