I have not forgotten y'all. I was in packing and moving hell. It's never fun. But it's mostly done and I'm slowly getting back into a fandom mindset (which, ya know, is oh so productive).
Supernatural Recs (19 Recs)
Note: I know that most of us have a fear of fanfiction.net, but I’ve found that many of the stories are not only readable for the Supernatural category, but not too shabby. Now, if only all the other categories would follow suit. But yes, don’t be scared if you see the fanfiction.net address here. I’ve sifted through the really BAD to bring you these recs. That’s right - I read the Dean crying single tears and saying things like “You complete me, Sam” so that you won’t have to. Love me. ~Tommygirl

It Happened One Night by
bruwinchester - A Christmas story that made me chuckle. "You fucking killed Santa Claus, dumbass."
2.
City Limit Line by
whereupon - Set in the aftermath of a hunt. This story is so beautifully written that it packs a powerful punch. No wind for miles, no wind for hours. They torch the nest, flames lighting up the sky, sparks like fireworks. Like celebration. The air smells like lightning and there are ashes in Sam's hair.

credo ut intelligam by
fryadvocate - The dean voice rocks in this thing and it’s NERDY good times, utilizing Latin. I love it. Or worse, Sam would try to pity him, maybe offer to help him out with the exercises, and then Dean would have to punch him in the face and throw away the book.

All the World Is a Stage by
mrscutedean - Yeah, another one of those that was written for me, so it probably makes me biased, but it’s good stuff. Sam has to deal with the role of protector and make sense of everything happening around him when Dean is hurt. Angst with a hopeful ending. Dean coughed harshly and the fear that had risen, threatened to choke him. It didn’t matter about his reaction towards the creature, none of that mattered when it came down to it. What mattered was his brother was hurt. And that scared Sam more than any creature he’d ever have to encounter.
5.
Facing the Dark by Ridley C. James - I’ll warn that there are a few typos and silly mistakes that could probably be caught with a beta and I try to avoid unbeta’d stories, but this one just hit all my kinks so I had to rec it. Sam is kept company while he waits for news on Dean after a job goes wrong. I love the brother relationship in this and the third person (an original character) perspective who sees how much both brothers do care about each other. And the angst. Good stuff. Sam had tried countless times to describe his brother to Jessica, when the subject of his family had arisen. She didn't get it. Not the strange emails, not the wierd post cards with cryptic messages that always found their way to him on birthdays and holidays, and not the short phone conversations that always seemed to put Sam in a funk for days after. Dean appeared simple on the outside. Badass, bad attitude, bad news. But that was the problem. That Dean was only a small layer, a bare glimpse, of what lay beneath.

Sine Qua Non by
tierce - Post Asylum - One of the many stories out there where the boys try to deal with Sam’s actions in the asylum. Full of snark and perfect characterization. And they work stuff out without it being overly-schmoopy. “Don’t give me that shit. You think that psycho doctor put that stuff into your head?” Dean motions to himself. “I read that guy’s journals, remember? He messed with people’s heads, made all their angry thoughts come out. Sure, maybe you don’t hate me or anythin’, but you sure don’t like me.”

A Miracle of Rare Device, by
jwynn - Post Asylum - A holiday story where Dean gives Sam a gift that makes Sam freak out. Brotherly angst with some snark and fun. Really, are you sensing a pattern in my Supernatural reccing? Sam felt hot tears prick his eyes, and he turned away, fighting hard not to let them fall. He shook, his whole body shook, but he couldn’t help it, couldn’t stop it, couldn’t fight it, couldn’t contemplate his brother being taken away from him, too.

Scarecrow Coda by
joyfulgirl41 - Post Scarecrow - I love the Dean voice in this, the look at the actually emotions that we see in Dean’s eyes that he never dares mention. Great coda to the episode. The Yes, sir. comes out automatically, and Dean can feel the anger rolling off Sam as he searches for a pen and paper. But Dean isn't like Sam--he can't afford to go off half-cocked just because he's pissed.

The In Between by
estrella30 - Post Faith - Five 100 word drabbles of Sam’s POV during the episode. Wonderful and sometimes heartbreaking. He says thank you. He smiles. He's held it together. It’s not until Sam hangs the phone up that his hands start to shake.

Faith Can Only Get You So Far by
shealynn88 - Post Faith - John gets Sam’s message during Faith and he tries to save both his sons. I love the portrayal of John in this story and that he does try to be a father to his boys in his own (very screwed up) way. For him, this choice was just another stain, like so many others. It was a small price to pay for saving his sons. He could only hope that, when it was all over they could forgive him, and themselves.

Fidelity by
stillane - Based off basic premise of Faith - I love the way this is written in the then and now format. It really works for the story. Also love the idea of Sam proving to Dean that he would give his life for his brother. Because it’s been said and it’s nice to see it acted on. “I was thinking I wasn’t going to stand by and watch you die. I was thinking you’d do the same for me. I was thinking you might just be all I’ve got left, and I’m not willing to let you go.” His eyes are dark and serious.

At Night by
pixel_0 - An A/U off of Faith - Gah. This story is heartbreaking and painful and if I had a heart, not only would I give it to Dean, but I’d cry buckets. Sam leaves voicemails for his father. At first they were distant and official, conveying nothing more than medical facts of the situation with a doctor’s sterility. As the time passes and Dean’s health collapses, the words become pleading and emotional.

Untitled by
paperbkryter - Post Faith - What if the Grim Reaper only bought Dean some extra time? Angst out the wazoo. It’s great. I love the brotherly angst. It was Sam who collapsed, sinking down onto one of the beds as if his knees had suddenly given out on him. That look, that painful, pitying look that Dean had sought to avoid, was on his face. This time the hurt took on a new flavor, one called betrayal.
14.
Scar Tissue by Spectral Scribe - Post Faith - The trip to Nebraska. Dean has things he wants to say, but he doesn’t know how, and Sam can’t give up hope. I enjoyed the look into all the things Dean wants to say to his brother. He cleared his throat to dislodge the lump that had formed, forcing his mind blank, trying to make light of the situation. He couldn’t let Sammy down… if he suddenly decided to spill his guts and regrets right here and now, he was positive that Sam, who had been holding together so well, would snap in half.
15.
Just A Little More Faith by JennK528 - Post Faith - Missing scenes from the early parts of Faith. I enjoyed this story because I didn’t think we got enough of the brother relationship during this episode. His brother had at least been by each day, but he never stayed long. Dean didn’t know whether to be grateful or hurt. Grateful in that he didn’t have to keep up his carefully constructed façade of stoic bravery and casual acceptance; hurt in that…Jesus; he was dying, and where the hell was Sam? Maybe he had some stuff he’d like to say to the brother who had gone away, maybe he’d like to spend some last few precious days trying to tell Sam everything he couldn’t say before…

Wait for Me by Kaly - Post Faith - Lots of angst from Sam’s POV set while Dean is in the hospital. There are a few grammatical errors in this, but it’s nothing too distracting…and it’s worth reading for the Sam POV during the period. Not to mention the angst factor, and y’all know I love the angst. Dean was going to be gone in weeks if he didn't find a miracle. Weeks. The word echoed oddly in Sam's mind. While he didn't regret his time at school, the longer they spent together on the road, the more Sam regretted allowing them to stay out of touch. Four years was a long time to be apart, after growing up so close.

A Crisis of Faith by
geminigrl11 - Post Faith - Dean feels guilty for being alive. Dean’s pissed Sam took him to the healer. Sam is pissed that Dean thinks so little of his importance. Sam’s hit his breaking point. “I should have left it alone? I should have let you die - is that what you mean? I should have just said, hey, Dean’s made his peace with this. I’ll just let him go, no big deal?” He feels like he’s choking. Every moment of the four days he’d spent living in fear that he was losing Dean - losing Dean - is pressing on his chest, making it hard for him to breathe.
18.
On Borrowed Time by P.L. Wynter - Post-Faith - A movie gets Dean to open up to Sam a little about his guilt. He gave a silent hoorah when he saw Dean’s lips curl up for a second. It was a shimmering reflection of the brother Sam knew. He was coming back. They just needed to get beyond this discussion and Dean would be back again. It’s how his brother worked. He’d brood and sulk for a few days and then he’d jump right back, having internalized all his emotions.

Clear by
eighth_horizon - Spoilers through Nightmare (unaired at this time) - I don’t know many spoilers for the episode outside of the bits in this story, but it’s a good read filled with Dean being protective of Sam and Sam trying to figure things out. "It's hard," Dean said. "And maybe it always will be. Whatever happens, whatever's coming, we'll watch out for each other. If I gotta protect you from you, I will. But I won't have to. Because you're Sam."
