Prologue

It was almost midnight and Akira and Kouyou had just arrived the Suzuki household, plopped on the living room couch tired and worn out. The two teenage boys had started attending dance class two weeks ago ever since they heard about a dance studio at the neighboring city holding Monday night workshops where guest hip-hop choreographers would come and teach. This Monday night workshop's guest choreographer was a pretty popular one that worked with a few celebrities. Well, at least that's what they heard since they weren't exactly updated on the whole dance scene. They were new to it actually, but at least they weren't terrible dancers to start with. Today had been especially been tiring since the style of the dance taught was mostly hard "sticking," a style in which every movement of the song required a hell lot of muscle control and flexing. It also involved holding your breath the entire dance to help stiffen your movement. It was a good thing it's summer, because both boy's parents wouldn't allow them to attend an evening workshop on school nights. "Want anything to drink?" Akira asks while getting off the couch and heading to the kitchen. His taller brunet friend does the same and climbs on a high island counter stool, "Whatever you have would be cool." Akira tossed him a bottle of raspberry iced tea and sat next to him.
"Did you like the choreographer today?"
Kouyou gulped his drink already half empty, "Yeah she was cool. The dance she taught kinda hurts though."
"Ha, you mean it hurts a lot. We've only learned that dance in 2 hours, and my upper body is already freaking sore." Akira raised his hand to massage his right shoulder.
"Pshhh when was the last time you did weights. If you went to the gym regularly, you wouldn't be having that problem. Bad timing to be letting go of yourself." The taller boy stated with a smirk.
"Yeah whatever," The other rolled his eyes. "It's not like you go neither."
"That's true, but I'm not going only because you're not. Besides, I don't think I really need it as much as you do" Kouyou was scrolling on his touchscreen phone.
It was true. Kouyou never really seemed to gain any weight no matter what he does. Akira on the other hand, though known to be an athlete and a soccer jock at school, there would be the times where he had scarce physical activity and it would really show. On his face, and his abdomen. Now that it's the summer season, Akira had to be extra careful during his free time to prevent from gaining undesired weight.
"Whatever. It's only been two weeks since summer started. Was it such a bad thing to take a little break to relieve stress from finals? Jeez."
The taller's eyes widened and then diverted from his phone them to Akira with a wide grin plastered on his face. "Nope, it's not a bad thing. Unless you actually want to have a chance to audition for PSC in two months."
"Wait. What?" Akira asked blankly.
Kouyou jumped off the stool and hurriedly took his tablet out of his backpack, and excitedly tapped away on the screen.
"Midori just texted me right now to check out the PSC website!" They huddled to look at the tablet, and there it was on the website. In clear big bold letters, the official announcement and poster for the Peace and Smile Company auditions, one of the top entertainment companies in the country. There were a few locations listed, but the one closest was at the neighboring city on September which was just three months away. As the two stared at the screen in awe, a loud knock resounded from the front door which made them jump from their seat. Kouyou quickly ran to the door.
"Ah I forgot to tell you that Lexy and Midori were on their way. Ehehe."
As soon as the door was opened, two girls busted through.
"Aaaaakiraaaa!" The first girl cried. She had long curly hair, and was wearing an over sized hoodie and shorts.
"Can you keep it down. It's late. And how did you get here so fast?" Replied the said boy.
"Oh please. It's not like anyone else is around. Besides, aren't your parents and little brother visiting your sister's place for a few days? And Midori was sleeping over my house tonight."
Akira barely noticed the mentioned girl wearing hoodie zipped open revealing purple pajamas on her thin body entering the the house.  "Oh hey Midori." Akira waved at her and turned back to Lexy. "Well at least wait until the front door is shut before you wake up the whole neighborhood. A hand was suddenly on his head, ruffling his hair and he tried to swat it away.
"Oh right! I remembered why I'm here." Lexy glanced at the doorway to check if the door was shut already and pulled her hand back from the mop of hair to grab his arm with both hands, "Aaaakiraaaa!" she started wailing again.
"What? PSC?"
"P. S. C~!" Now she was whining.
"Yeah, I know. Kouyou and I just saw the website literally right before you came in." He roughly pulled his arm back away from the girl's clutch.
"You're doing it. You are going to audition on September, right?" She was looking at him straight in the eyes.
Akira glanced over to the other male in the room. "I don't know. Kou says that that I've gotten fat."
"Hey I didn't say that. I said that he's gotta watch out when he's not doing anything. In my defence, he was complaining that his arms hurt after the workshop tonight and I was only reminding him that he should go back to the gym." Lexy glared at the taller brunet.
"Kouyou darling, stop making Aki feel bad. Not everyone is blessed with an effortlessly perfect body like you." She turned back to the other boy.
"Kou is right though. Do not even think of being lazy. How was the workshop today by the way? Tell me what I missed, and if it was worth missing for my mom's co-worker's dinner party."
"It was good. I heard the choreographer is pretty popular. Lots of sticking though." Kouyou replied.
"Oh okay, I don't feel too bad now then. I hate sticking." Lexy shivered at the thought. "If she's popular, then my sister would probably know who she is, and she would've wanted to learn from her. I'm gonna text her." She said taking her phone out from her hoodie's pocket.
"But seriously Akira. Isn't this what we've been dreaming of? Don't tell me you're not doing it."
"Yeah Aki. Don't you want to be famous?" Kouyou wiggled his brows.
"Yeah, but... I don't know. I'm not ready to audition." Akira looked down.
"No, Akira. Don't you want to be a star? Because, I do. And Kouyou does too" she turned to the other boy, "Don't you, Kouyou. You're auditioning too, right?
"Hell yes I am. Like you said, I've got the body, and I'm pretty sure I've got the looks, so why the hell not?" The words that came out from the beautiful boy didn't help Akira at all.
"And I know you do too. You've done everything you can do to in hopes to become a star, so why don't you think you're ready?"
"Unlike Kouyou over there, I'm not really as confident about my looks. Besides, doesn't PSC only choose pretty people?"
"Get over it Akira. You look fine. Besides, it's a known fact that people get prettier by the time they debut.
"Oh my gosh you guys! It's out!" the quiet girl in the room suddenly exclaimed, catching everyone's attention. Midori hurriedly got up and ran to the next room and turned on 80-inch screen television and wirelessly connected her phone. "It's out, it's out! It's midnight. Hurry guys! The official audition promo video was just released right now." Midori said excitedly.
The three others soon followed in the room and crammed on the leather couch beside her.
"Couldn't you just show us on your phone?" Akira asked, not wanting to wait for the video to buffer on the TV.
"No way. It's better and HD sexier this way. And I know there's someone you want to see in sexy HD." Midori replied with a smirk on her face.
The video finally began, playing colorful flashing lights, upbeat and catchy instrumental background music, and big bold words just like the poster on the website. It listed the dates and 6 cities scattered around the country that the auditions would be held. They seem to be extremely lucky, since one of the cities was just close by. Closer is cheaper and more convenient.
The next shown was a montage of clips of Peace and Smile's current artists; those were a few of the country's most successful actors, models and musicians. Each of them revealed; beautiful people beautified and made up with even more bright flashing lights, and flattering camera angle views that made everyone look intimidating. It was intimidating, but very convincing. It was basically asking the viewers, Are You Good Enough to Become One of Us?
There was one group however, that Akira was anticipating to see.
"Wahh! Toshiya!" Lexy started fangirling when a smoky-eyed face appeared on screen. A few other men appeared beside each other as they danced to the beat of the high-tension music. One by one, of each member was revealed with the same dark smoky concept. Akira then saw his face clearly for a brief moment, the face of the one person he looked up to the most. That one star he wanted to possibly reach. The men disappeared into a dark silhouette while the scene changed by the end of the video with one question,
WHO IS NEXT?
When the video ended, the teens all had mouths open and a sparkle in their eyes. As the girls replayed the video, something clicked in Akira's brain. He remembered why he even bothered to think about wanting to be famous in the first place.
'Fuck it' he told himself.
"Kou, starting tomorrow, we're heading back to the gym. We are doing this."
