Six Degrees of AWESOME
So, I decided to create a kink meme. I don't know if you know what a kink meme is, friends of mine, but I will elaborate: it is a thread (usually on LJ, but possible in Yahoo!groups or dreamwidth or whatev) in which people post and answer requests for (most often, erotic) fanfic, usually for a particular fandom. Like, if this was a Star Wars kink meme, I could post (in the comments) "Han/Lando, tickling" and if someone wanted to fill my request, they'd write a short story about Han and Lando tickling one another, and post that in reply to my comment.
My idea for a kink meme combines that idea with the six degrees of separation game. Characters from completely different fandoms could be linked by authors who write them, directors, or actors who play them. Within six steps.
For example:
1. Professor Trelawney in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, played by Emma Thompson, who also plays Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing
2. Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing, played by Robert Sean Leonard, who also plays Dr. Wilson from House, MD
3. Dr. House from House, MD, played by Hugh Laurie, who also plays Bertie Wooster from Jeeves and Wooster
4. Jeeves from Jeeves and Wooster, played by Stephen Fry, who also plays Oscar Wilde in Wilde
5. Lord Alfred Douglas, played by Jude Law in Wilde, who also plays Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes
6. Irene Adler in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, played by Rachel McAdams, who also plays Regina George in Mean Girls
Trelawney/Regina George, DOM/sub
...And if someone felt inspired to write such a ridiculous(ly awesome?) thing, they would write a story about Professor Trelawney and Regina George in a Dominance/submission relationship or situation. (There could be classic British boarding school spanking-for-bad-behavior going on, easily. Or, like, leashes?) It would probably be cracky as hell. But I like that!
So I created an LJ community, 6degreesofkink (how do I make that a link to the comm? D:), in order to make this happen, but I haven't really gotten the ball rolling yet cause I'm lazy and I'm not sure how to get fandomy peeps to visit it, or even know of its existence. I have an idea of how, but I've never done it before, so, nervous.
My favorite existing kink meme is the Watchmen kink meme, somewhere on LJ, because it was at one point extremely active, and MANY of the posts are filled (some with reeeeeeally long stories!). And it's really cracky and hilarious and good-spirited and non-wanky and awesome. And some of the stories are like, one cheesy paragraph or two, and some are, like, cheesy epics, and a few (one?) are just plain epic. (It's the "Rorschach is a zombie" one, and it is such a cracky premise, but so fantastically executed, with great characterization...and really, it doesn't belong on a kink meme as there's no sex in it, but it's the best Watchmen fanfic EVAR, so it's cool.)
I think I should add a rule to my meme that Jack Harkness can have sex with anyone in any fandom ever, because that should just be, you know, obvious. Omnisexual time travelers from the fifty first century who are ridiculously promiscuous and utterly convinced of their own babeness get to have ANYONE. Even if the other party has no physical manifestation and/or sentience. He is THAT GOOD.
I also think there should be a genfic version of this meme, cause crossovers have potential sometimes, and I'd like there to be, say, zombiefic or genderswap fic for every fandom. Really. You can't have too many zombies. But I would have to provide a little more structure than just the six degrees thing, I think, or people would just post fics where Iron Man bitchslaps Dr. Manhattan or something, and that can get boring. Maybe settings? Or specific conceits, like "cyborgs" or "meta/fourth wall breakage"? Or "with footnotes"? "In the form of an autopsy report"? Not sure yet. CAN HAS SUGGESTIONS PLZ?
