" to such an extent that there will never now be a united United States"

Demographics may save us.

In the nation as a whole, Republicans are consistently loosing more often than winning the popular vote for both the Presidency, and the Senate in aggregate (though for technical reasons this popular loss is not reflected in representative power)

So long as Republicans pursue their current strategy, this trend will continue and intensify.

Eventually the popular asymmetry will be too great to be held at bay by the effects of systemic urban under-representation, demographic clustering, and out-right gerrymandering.

Then, the question is... can the party self correct and realign? If not, it will become irrelevant and be replaced in turn, as it replaced the Whigs.

If THAT happens, the new party, having little or no institutional baggage, will be free to cooperate (or not) with whatever the Democratic party has become, and we can return, for some short time, to a 2 party system where either side can be the loyal opposition, rather than the petulant child who takes his ball and goes home when he does not get his way.
