Single-payer is better than private insurance because it eliminates the profit motive on the insurance side. But it still drives up health care costs by encouraging providers to bill as much as they can instead of competing on price. The ideal solution would be market-based (which would require making health insurance completely illegal) and a welfare/voucher program to ensure that everyone has access to basic care.
The one-upmanship is the same either way. But with private insurance, there's the additional market-distorting incentive to promise to pay the most and actually pay the least.
Strong market regulations are exactly what I'm advocating. I want to regulate insurance out of existence, for essentially the same reason that Ponzi schemes were regulated out of existence.

It would be so simple, really, especially compared to the convoluted situation that exists now (or the one that existed before Obamacare).
Unfortunately, Republicans just can't STAND the idea of the government doing something that might actually help regular people. I really don't get it.
P.S. The icon is one I made back during the wrangling in Congress to get the Affordable Care Act passed. I kind of hate that it's STILL relevant. :-\
