“I understand the reasons that governed the decision to resort to these interrogation methods, and I know that those who approved them and those who used them were dedicated to securing justice for the victims of terrorist attacks and to protecting Americans from further harm. ... But I dispute wholeheartedly that it was right for them to use these methods, which this report makes clear were neither in the best interests of justice nor our security nor the ideals we have sacrificed so much blood and treasure to defend ... we are always Americans, and different, stronger, and better than those who would destroy us.”
I started reading this this morning but realized I hadn't finished throwing up over the Eric Garner story, and couldn't finish it. I'll try later after a few klonopin have kicked in, and I hopefully don't have a stroke from outrage.
"All that "I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved" was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically -- any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace. Everything's the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. I am not violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence. I will have to be a lot older before I can face in public how I treated women as a youngster."
It's hilarious because Feinstein was all about the NSA and CIA spying until they spied on her and Congress and then she (rightfully) spanked their hineys.
In my America, it wouldn't matter anymore what party you belonged to. Everyone would be out on the streets, demanding justice. Demanding that we live up to the ideals we supposedly stand for. Demanding justice.
This isn't the America I thought I lived in. I don't know if it ever actually was.
I suspect we idealized America a bit. I think the government has always used torture, as perhaps all governments have. The fact that this is being hashed out on the floor of Congress says something, though. We do seem to have a higher ideal of ourselves and sometimes try to live up to it.
