National Service doesn't always mean military service. I'm of the opinion that if everyone had to put in some form of national service for at least two years after graduating from college, they'd be the better for it.

Plus, in most countries where the education is free there is compulsory national service of some sort to repay in kind.

Only about 25% of Danes wind up having to do it (and some for only 3 months). There's not enough jobs that need doing. And they do heaps of non-military stuff (fire fighting, forest management, environmental corps.).

They were in Afghanistan and Iraq though :P
