Colbert urges an Amazon boycott

Stephen Colbert went after Amazon Wednesday night, literally giving the retailer the finger on his Comedy Central show. Twice. “I’m not just mad at Amazon,” Mr. Colbert said. “I’m Mad Prime.” The New York Times blog "Bits" explains the origins of the boycott. And this isn't the first time a boycott has been suggested; others have encouraged Amazon boycotts for a variety of reasons, including the impact on brick and mortar bookstores.

To thwart Amazon's refusal to allow pre-orders, Colbert Nation has crafted a deal with Powell books, to pre-order a book "California" at a discount. Pre-orders are extremely important for new authors, and can be vitally important for the success of an author. Colbert Nation also has included stickers labelled "I didn't buy it on Amazon" for book buyers to use to emblazon on their books. An Amazon spokesperson refused to make any comments to the New York Times on the boycott.

Two video clips from last night's show:
Amazon vs. Hachette
and Author Sherman Alexie argues that Amazon has too much control over the book market, and Stephen calls on the Colbert Nation to order Edan Lepucki's "California."
