Hold on:

Wasn't the first state in the nation to accept gay marriage Iowa?
Wasn't the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana Colorado/Washington?
Wasn't the first state in the nation to create UHC for it's own citizens Vermont?

Bill Maher, you play fast and loose with the facts sometimes, dont you?

Shit, didn't Cali voters *reject* legal pot, and legal gay marriage?

Not to call him on his shit, but...wait, I want to do exactly that.

Hawaii started the ball way back in the 1990s, by giving legal standing to same sex unions, which prompted Congress to prevent other states from doing the same by passing the DOMA.

Wasn't the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana Colorado/Washington?

No, Oregon. Back in the 1970s, I believe.

Wasn't the first state in the nation to create UHC for it's own citizens Vermont?

Yes. For reasons that California couldn't until now: a legislative body and governor working together.
And California is considering doing the same now. Technically, I think the first place in the United States that considered health care for entire groups may have been New York City with the establishment of city hospitals and other services in the 1930s (I'm fuzzy on the details).

I understand same sex civil unions are different than same-sex marriage, but was the first state in the nation to accept, full faith and credit, same sex marriages, Iowa or Cali?

What? The state of Oregon legalized marijuana for recreational consumption in the 1970's??! Link please?

And I wasn't suggesting *why* Maher was wrong, just that he is ignoring the fact that what Cali is doing isn't all that brand-spanking-new, and it happens elsewhere too. Prop 8 is evidence that Cali isn't dragging us forward.

Massachusetts was first - 2004 thanks to the MA Supreme Court in "Goodridge v. Department of Public Health". Iowa legalized same-sex marriage based on a ruling from its Supreme Court in 2009.
