Speaking as someone in the private sector, it is not in my best interest to give you a raise. It IS in my interest to make you salary, then give you mandatory 'overtime' (for which you will not be paid overtime rates, as you are salaried), fire one of your co-workers, give you his work to do in addition to yours, and then claim the savings have reduced department overhead, thus making my bonus for the quarter.

History suggests otherwise. Weak government has usually meant chaos. Strong government can too, don't get me wrong, but that's why we got rid of monarchs.
