Mary: Weeee. In some ways they have very similar backgrounds- immediate family gone, sent to live with a distant relative they never knew before.
However, if it weren't for the fact that Mary is 1)much younger than him, and 2) a girl, she'd walk all over him. He does realize that she's much more stronger and stubborn and resolute than he can be, and he rather admires her for it. That said- he's still able to put his foot down to her when needed. (And even that's been pretty rare.) He's also resigned to the fact that Mary is going to look for answers on nearly anything, so it's prolly for the best to let her and make sure she has access to what she needs to find those answers. Wellard... just doesn't want her to learn about some things the hard way, such as killing people, or other situations where she can get hurt. Learning things academically- fine. He also wants to do his best to protect her as well.
Jamie: It amuses me that Wellard still sometimes forms his impressions of people based on how they would have done in the Navy. Jamie would have been one of those midshipmen who ended up in a lot of fights with other middies because he couldn't keep his mouth shut, alas. Given that Wellard has liked him so far- he prolly would have joined in on those fights to try to keep Jamie from getting too hurt. (And then also harassed him about keeping his mouth shut, afterwards.)
(Change that around from "in the navy" to "on a pirate ship", and I rather think the same would have happened.)
He does think Jamie is normal (for a given value)- people at Milliways do come from odd worlds and backgrounds, so such things as Jamie speaking Russian he hardly gives a second thought to.
