If only we could view our history as we view its artefacts- with an admiring and affectionate detachment- holding it up to the light, admitting the flaws. How much bad stuff has gone down because your grandfather was mean to my grandfather? Our ancestors were interesting people, delightful people, creative people but let's let their hatreds die with them.
