“I want that giant purple unicorn.”
“Isn’t it…too big? Where the hell would you even put that? And what the hell are you gonna do with it?”
“I don’t know. I don’t care. I just want it.”
“Wait, are you implying that I should get it for you?”
Kibum nodded sweetly and batted his eyelashes up at the older one. Jong Hyun sighed.
“No fucking way.” He shook his head and turned to leave, but Kibum pouted and ran after him.
“Aw, please, please, please, please, pleaaaase?!” Kibum whined as he trailed behind. Jong Hyun sighed in defeat.
“What do I have to do, anyways?” Kibum grinned and dragged Jong Hyun back to the booth.
“Simple. You just have to get a ring on a bottle neck. Sounds easy enough, right?”
“I-I guess.” Jong Hyun exhaled sharply and used eight coupons to buy a big bucket of plastic rings. He threw one, and he was sure that it would go in, but it bounced off the side and fell. Kibum scoffed.
“You suck. Here, let me try.” Kibum did the same, but completely missed the bottles. Jong Hyun laughed and placed a hand on Kibum’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry, what were you saying earlier?”
Kibum puffed his cheeks out and stuck his hands in his pockets. “I’m bored. I’m gonna get some cotton candy.”
Jong Hyun opened his mouth to protest, but Kibum was gone when he turned around. And so he was stuck with the bottles, and the rings, and the giant purple unicorn looking mockingly down at him. Jong Hyun was starting to think that the damn purple unicorn was evil.
--
“There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you!” Kibum panted, as he spotted Jong Hyun sitting on a bench by himself. It was evident that Kibum didn’t even remember the purple unicorn from earlier, and how much he bothered Jong Hyun for it. The older one glared up at him.
“You’ve been looking all over for me? You ditched me, you fucker!” Jong Hyun threw what seemed to be popcorn kernels at Kibum, and the younger one squeaked and ducked at the kernels that were hurled in his direction.
“Hey, watch the hair! And I’m sorry, I’m sorry, okay?! I got distracted after I got cotton candy with Taemin, and god, I’m tired. Let’s go home.”
“No. I want to go on the Ferris wheel.”
“But that’s boring, Jjong!” Kibum whined, but Jong Hyun had already grabbed his hand and was dragging him towards the nonexistent line to the Ferris wheel. “See, no one’s even here. The Ferris wheel is lame, Jjong. Let’s go.” Kibum turned to leave, but Jong Hyun stopped him.
“Fuck no. You ditched me. You owe me. We’re riding the fucking Ferris wheel.”
“Can’t we just-“
“No.”
“I hate you.” Kibum sighed.
“Mm, love you too.” Jong Hyun ushered Kibum into one of the carriages, and got on himself. He sat down across Kibum and frowned as the ride started moving. Kibum shifted uneasily in his seat and bit down on his lip. The thought of them rising up higher from the ground with each passing second made him more uncomfortable than he would like to admit.
“Tell me you have a good reason for dragging me up here with you?”
“Just sit back and enjoy the scenery, will you? Look, you can see everything from here.” Jong Hyun peered over the edge and smiled at how everything just looked like a mix of colours from up there.
“Oh, I’d rather not.”
“Why? It’s pretty, look!” Jong Hyun pointed out when the ride suddenly halted, leaving them halfway from the top. Kibum closed his eyes and grabbed Jong Hyun’s hand tightly in his, breathing heavily. “K-Kibum, are you okay?!”
“I-I’m fine. I’m okay.” Kibum replied, but his eyes remained closed.
“Are you sure? You don’t look okay to me.” Jong Hyun moved to check Kibum’s temperature with his hand, which caused the carriage to rock slightly. Kibum jolted up and immediately grabbed Jong Hyun’s arm, putting it in some sort of death-lock hold. “Kibum, Kibum! You’re cutting off the circulation in my arm! Let go!” Jong Hyun squirmed as he tried to get his arm free, which only caused the cubby to rock more violently, and Kibum’s death-lock hold to become even tighter.
“Stop moving the fucking carriage! I’d hit you right now but I’m too scared. Why the fuck did we stop?! Oh my god, oh my god, we’re gonna die! We’re gonna fucking die, Jjong!” Kibum sobbed, and the older one didn’t know whether he should comfort Kibum or laugh. He steadied himself down and sat back down, before he reached over to pat Kibum’s head in an effort to calm him down.
“Shh, don’t cry, Kibum. We’re not gonna die. I got them to stop it here because I wanted to show you something. Why didn’t you just tell me you were afraid of heights in the first place?”
“I am not! I didn’t know we were gonna stop in the fucking middle, that’s all I’m freaking out about, I swear. Couldn’t you show me what you were gonna show me back when we were on land?!”
“Okay, okay! Jesus fucking Christ Kibum! Then why are you still clinging onto my arm like you’re going to fall off a cliff or something?”
“Don’t. Say. That!” Kibum gritted his teeth and bit Jong Hyun’s arm.
“You fucking twat! What the hell was that for?!” Jong Hyun pulled his arm away from Kibum, and rocked the carriage again. Kibum whimpered and only clung on tighter, and Jong Hyun sighed. It was impossible. There goes the money he spent to rent the Ferris wheel.
“Put us down right now, please.” Kibum started sobbing again, and Jong Hyun nodded. He signaled for the person who controlled the ride to slowly bring them back down, and Jong Hyun held Kibum comfortingly against his chest all the way down. Jong Hyun held Kibum up as they got off, and he felt Kibum quiver under his hold.
“Kibum, I’m sorry.” Jong Hyun hugged Kibum, as the younger one hit his back repeatedly.
“Jong Hyun I hate you! You’re such an idiot!” Kibum yelled and tried to run away, but Jong Hyun caught his arm.
“Kibum, please, I’m sorry! I won’t ever do that again. I thought it seemed like a romantic idea at the moment.” Jong Hyun turned his gaze away, and Kibum immediately stopped crying.
“W-what the hell are you talking about?”
Jong Hyun signaled something to the person operating the Ferris wheel, and one of the carriages lowered down. Jong Hyun pulled Kibum towards it slowly, but Kibum was hesitant.
“Don’t worry; we’re not going on it again. Remember I said I wanted to show you something?” Jong Hyun asked, and Kibum followed, nodding his head slightly. Jong Hyun opened the door, and the giant purple unicorn from earlier was stuffed inside, surrounded by flowers.
“Jjong, what the fuck is that?”
“It’s the goddamn unicorn you told me to win for you earlier! I spent like, an hour trying to get a fucking plastic ring on one of the bottle necks.” Jong Hyun shook his head.
“It looks…bigger.”
“I don’t know. Maybe it ate some of the flowers in there.”
“It looked smaller when it was up on display, I swear.”
“No, it was this huge to begin with. Maybe it did swell a bit, I really don’t know.” Jong Hyun shrugged.
It took a combination of Jong Hyun, Kibum and the operator’s strength to pull the giant plushie out of the carriage. They all stumbled back when it came out, but Jong Hyun managed to steady them.
“Okay. Now how are we taking this home?”
“Carry it.”
“No fucking way!”
“Then why don’t you go ride it home, Kibum?” Jong Hyun grinned, and Kibum glared at him.
“So what exactly happened? How the hell did this end up in there?” Kibum poked the soft side of the plushie and smiled.
“Well, I lugged this all the way over here without getting it dirty, and then I rented the Ferris wheel and had to get the operator guy to help me stuff him in there and plan this whole fucking thing. But then you cried and ruin it all” Jong Hyun scoffed. “Oh, and by the way, happy anniversary.”
Kibum muttered something under his breath and Jong Hyun’s expression softened into a laugh.
“It’s okay. I think I found one use for this unicorn, though.” Jong Hyun grinned and pulled Kibum behind the pile of purple plush, and stood on his tip toes. Kibum was taken back for a second, but registered the feel of Jong Hyun’s lips against his in seconds. They enjoyed the kiss, hidden happily behind the purple unicorn.
Then, Jong Hyun thought, maybe the purple unicorn wasn’t so evil after all.
