well, here, this is just the recipe for chess cookies that i instead used to make a (simplified) american flag shape. yes, mine were kind of huge, feel free to try and make normal-sized cookies ´q`;;
btw, if you haven't had these before they taste really kind of plainly so it's mostly for the easy pattern-making. you could try to add syrup or nuts or something to make the dough a bit more interesting.

※ 100 g butter
※ 2.5 dl flour
※ 0.5 dl sugar
※ 0.5 tsp baking powder
※ 1 tsp vanilla sugar for half of it (optional)
※ 1 tbsp cocoa powder for half of it
mix everything except cocoa powder and vanilla sugar into a dough.
split in half and mix cocoa in one half and vanilla in the other.
cover with plastic and rest in fridge for 30 minutes.
split into pieces - two plain ones (plus a small leftover piece for "stars") and four brown ones. one of the plain ones has to be bigger than the other and two of the brown ones bigger than the other two - sorry, i can't give you precise directions here, so use your head ´w`;; shape them together - you can use my photo below for reference. it should be tall and not flat, as we're slicing cookies from it.
when you've shaped the flag, use a sharp enough knife and slice cookies from the side of your flag. carefully place them next to each other on a tray with baking paper. from some plain dough, roll very small balls and squish them on your cookies for something representing the stars.
bake at 175 degrees (celsius) for around 7-10 minutes, more if needed. i ended up getting mine a little burnt since our oven is really difficult to tell when it's done with.
by the way, these cookies usually end up really fragile so be careful! they'll fall apart at any opportunity. i don't know if adding more butter to the dough makes this less prone to happen or something?
