It never ceases to astonish me how virulently and even violently so many self-professed libertarians and fundamentalist Christians respond to the idea that global warming is real, even when -- or even especially when -- it is pointed out to them that global warming is real, and that countering global warming is a great way to make one's fortunes as well as to do everyone good. Why anyone would find those who take global warming as an opportunity both to make their fortunes and, at the same time, enable consumers to reap signifcant financial and other benefits, and possibly even save the world as a result, enemies who benefit Communists and other socialists as well as the wooly-brained, well-meaning idiots who support any form of Socialism, including Fascism and Nazism, is beyond me. How can entrepreneural venture capitalism which, in finding a way to increase the efficiency of all our machine and other technological processes, saves the consumer huge amounts of money and, at the same time, helps reduce man-made pollution, including heat pollution, to all-time lows, help Socialists of whatever stripe? How can it damage fundamentalist Christianity? How can it damage our liberties? And how can it destroy America and the constitutional rights of Americans?
Yet that is what altogether too many libertarians and fundamentalist Christians seem to believe: that viewing global warming as not only real, but an opportunity to make one's fortune through entrepreneurial venture capitalism by reducing the inefficiency of all industrial and privately owned machines of all kinds to as close to zero as possible, is something that only anti-libertarian, anti-Christian, anti-capitalist and anti-American people would do. "Global warming is real = making money in a way that reduces heat-pollution and, at the same time, augments savings by consumers through entrepreneurial venture capitalism = Communist/Islamist takeover." What's wrong with this picture?
Something has gone seriously wrong with any religion or political or philosophical movement that adopts such a position. It sounds disturbingly like Al Gore: "Let's kill capitalism even if it kills the planet and all humanit with it." Or the Greens' "Let's burn down Mother Nature and the planet to save them." The evidence that global warming is a reality is solid and sufficient. So, however, is the evidence, taken from basic physics and chemistry courses, that environmental pollution of any kind, including thermal pollution, is a byproduct of inefficient machine processes; that decreasing the inefficiency of our machines increases the profits of those owning businesses using them and the savings of consumers who use them or their byproducts; and that the same holds true as far as minimizing global warming as well as all other forms of environmental pollution goes.
So why are these so-called defenders of liberty, capitalism, America, and Christianity all holding out against a) admitting global warming is real and b) getting busy on developing new technologies as well as refining old technologies to reduce heat and other forms of pollution, a move that would benefit them as well as consumers and industrialists? Could it be that they all hate liberty, capitalism, America, and Christianity, and would like nothing better to have the world burn down, thus destroying all these and their adherents, not to mention everyone and everything else alive on Earth?
Gee, funny you should ask that . . .
