Do I think the Earth is out to get us, to repay us for what we've done to her. No. It's very likely a natural phenomenon, although why it should only be happening now, and has apparently never happened in the past (that we know of), there is very likely an understandable natural mechanism behind the formation of these holes. Noctilucent clouds, which only began to appear in 1885 or so, a couple of years after the eruption of Krakatoa, the first known noctilucent clouds appeared. As they almost always appear in early Summer, when skies tend to be clear, there are always people who can see and report on them. We have no known reports at all of them, either written reports or those transmitted orally, of such clouds being seen by anyone, anywhere, before then. But they do no harm to us at all, and are very likely entirely natural phenomena. So these cases of holes suddenly appearing in sand dunes and swallowing people is very, very likely natural in origin.
