Whether you are Christian or not, consider that most of today's children, regardless of their ethnic or religious background, are without an understanding of the universe -- moral, religious, scientific, or anything else -- that holds that they are part of something far larger than themselves, in a cosmos vastly larger still in both space and time, and that within us is something that knows that if we do not build ourselves into our communities, our nations, and our living world, we will live in a psychological, spiritual, and biological vacuum that offers little if any satisfaction in life and no feeling of true achievement, Even the sciences give that understanding. Why are our religious institutions and culture failing to do that for our children? Religion used to give real meaning to life, and as Neil de Grasse Tyson points out, so do the sciences. Yet the current generation of children don't seem to have gotten the message from either science or religion. As they grow older, their growing feelings of alienation and cosmic insecurity are going to leave them in considerable emotional trouble. Somehow, that has to change.
