Somehow, by some miracle, Shub and Eris, my two rosebushes, are thriving. They've been out on the porch all winter, and are potted roses (so their root systems can't expand very far or run deep down to avoid freezing), yet so far they've survived the winter quite handily. Now, these are Kmart roses; none of the rose bushes I've gotten anywhere have ever survived the winter outside (nor inside; but it turns out that the screen door over the glass door out to the porch cuts the light just enough to block what plants need for food as far as sunlight goes, and indoor lighting of the sort I can afford doesn't work for them, either). Yet my babies are doing well out there, flushing out with foliage, getting ready to bloom in the spring. By some fluke of chance I got good rootstock in them, something. I have no idea what the real reason they're alive is, but I'm so glad they are.
The cherry trees are starting to blossom all over Seattle, as well. This winter we've had snow and freezing rain more days than not, but the cherry trees think it's spring already. What's going on here?
