After over 20 years of drilling through two miles of glacial ice, Russian scientists have reportedly penetrated the surface of Antarctica's largest subglacial lake.

This lake has not seen daylight for at least 125,000 years. Its oxygen levels are 50 times higher than those found in a typical freshwater lake. The organisms in it may be nothing like those found in surface waters. This is one of the most exciting scientific projects being conducted today.
