http://news.discovery.com/space/save-the-galaxy-destroy-humanity-110818.html This, gang, is what's called a Blue-Sky Thought Piece. It's supposed to make you think, not mindlessly accept or reject it whole cloth. If you do think, you could come up with rebuttals, support, whatever -- as long as you read it through and think it through.
Frankly, I think some of this blue-skying is why we haven't gotten to Mars. Yet. Back in the 1970s, somebody in Washington, DC decided to junk the Mars program -- and did so because they were afraid that if we did put settlements on Mars, extraterrestrials would come roaring in and exterminate us all. Letting a mangy little coward like that dictate to us whether we should be a viable species that helps other species be viable by taking lots of them to Mars or fold our hands and quietly shuffle off this mortal coil is a bad decision.
Where have all the heroes gone? Dammit, Mars needs heroes -- lots of them. Let's do Mars!
