DoD Buzz | GOP To Tea Party: Don’t Cut Defense

With one wary eye on the Tea Party movement and its potentially isolationist policies, representatives of GOP thinktanks sent a simple message today: don’t cut Pentagon weapons systems in the belief that the American homeland can be protected without a military that can fight and project power around the globe. . . .

I have to agree. In a world filled with religiously wigged-out cargo cultists who are now, at least potentially, armed with nukes, we can't afford to pretend that if we just turn our backs on the world, it will turn its back on us. Hell, we haven't been able to afford that since 1933 -- as we learned the hard way, at Pearl Harbor. And learned again, still the hard way, from 9-11.

That we don't take account of the world doesn't mean that the world won't come looking for us -- with blood in its eye. We need to be prepared for that. As long as we're human, there will be war, and no amount of wish-fulfillment dreams, however idealistic, is going to change that.
