Woods-puddy

In James Thurber's "The Scotty Who Knew Too Much," a Scotty dog who thinks he knows it all meets his nemesis. This happens a lot to people who don't look where they're leaping. Of course, naivete may explain at least some of it -- as in, for example, the case of a young collie dog who belonged to our next-door neighbors in the neighborhood in Pasadena, California, where I grew up. One night in mid-August, when the temperatures were over 90 degrees, the humdity was worse than in the tropics at night, and heavy daytime smog lingered way into the wee hours of the morning to add even more mischief to our misery, Mitzi, the collie, spotted what she took to be a black-and-white cat that had wandered into their yard. Of course, she gave chase, and managed to trap the animal just beneath the open bedroom window of the master and mistress, who were not happy about the results. Mitzi, you see, hadn't yet become acquainted with the fact that skunks patrolled the neighborhood at that time of year. The animal she took for a cat, trapping and dipatching it right beneath the bedroom window of the master bedroom, was a skunk. Poor Mitzi got a bath in vinegar and V-8 that night, and the family slept in the den for the next couple of weeks while the stench gradually left the master bedroom.

I got to thinking about that last night while considering, all over again, the "10:10" Green fanatics who put out that charming video as a call to arms for the environmental movement that we were all engaged in discussing on LJ yesterday. It turns out that while Youtube does indeed have an audience of tens of millions all over the world, it isn't quite the social medium that whatever idiot who posted that video thought it was. Somebody found out the hard way that that helpless, slow-moving black-and-white kitty was actually a woods-puddy . . . Hey, we got another slow-moving, helpless critter over thisaway, has a nice coat covered with these pretty, stiff little things, just grab it by the back and hey, presto, the ER will have a great laugh about the idiot who came in with a mouthful of quills. XD

environmental movement, animals, psychology, behavior, stupidity, sociology, stupid human tricks, youtube
