Red rainbow

Jun 15, 2010 21:46

The Sun set about half an hour ago. It had been raining not long before that, and the streets were shiny with liquid. I looked out my eastern windows and saw the lower half of one side of the arch of a brilliant cherry-red rainbow somewhat northeast of here; behind the partial rainbow, a gorgeous magenta haze hung over the land to the east, a slightly less intense reddish-pink Belt of Venus just above it. The partial crimson rainbow was bright enough that it almost hurt the eyes; there it stood, an impossible beacon of cold cerise flame just ahead of that lovely curtain of magenta haze below the Belt of Venus, proof that the unexpected universe lies in wait for us to relax our guard so that it may pounce upon us and strike down our grim determination to disbelieve in a Magickal universe with great velvet paws of delight.

It's dark outside now. I wonder if I shall ever see such a sight again. Probably not, but perhaps I'll see something just as gloriously, impossibly beautiful someday.
