Teachers like the bottles because kids "play around too much" at the water fountain. They don't want the kids to have to stand in line, splash each other, and ask to be excused when they are thirsty. They can just sit in their desks like good little robots and drink their petrochemical laden water.
Bladder infections are on the rise in little girls because they are not given enough access to clean water during the day, and then they are shamed if they need to use the restroom outside of "approved break times". Girls learn early on to hold it in, or face being chastised for weakness in front of the whole class. When that does't work, they pee their pants, and the humiliation just continues.
I actually had to call the school administrator and DEMAND that my daughter be allowed to go to the bathroom as often as she wanted to. Her school also told the kids that the pipes for the drinking fountains were icky, and to not use them (even though the water was good enough for the other people who shared the building).

Yeah, we're switching schools next year.
