System fail

Imagine a program so badly written that, upon being installed on a computer, immediately sets about trashing the platform. That is, suppose someone with a desktop PC on which is installed Windows XP installs an application on the computer which, upon being evoked, at once does everything it can to destroy Windows XP on that computer.

That is an extremely close analogy of what humanity is doing to our living world. In a little over 10,000 years we have destroyed huge swaths of the natural world and rendered vast numbers of the world's species extinct, with more going extinct every day. We are not a viable species -- any species which works to destroy the very habitat it depends on for its survival is by definition a winner of a big fat Darwin Award. Worse, we are a species which seems hellbent on destroying its own future: there is no other known creature that works so hard to damage or destroy its own females and its young. Woman-battering, rape of women, and child abuse of all kinds are pandemic the world over, and both men and women indulge themselves in it. We seem to be programmed for species suicide. Confront many people with this and they'll puff themselves up and act proud of it, the way many industrialists are proud of the habitat destruction caused by the activities of their companies.

Which makes you wonder if, upon one of God's off days, somebody from Hell sneaked into God's workshop and made humanity.

human ecology, anthropogenesis, astrobiology, mass extinctions, child abuse
