Stories from the 44th Floor (45th, counting the mezzanine)

The world, it's full of things!

Life's gotten better since my crazy car troubles, now that both cars are fixed. Taxes are turned in, the house is (relatively) clean, and I've had a little time to relax. This past weekend was the most relaxing in a while, and there were lots of fun things that happened that are worth sharing.

First of all, since I had nothing major to do, I got to spend Saturday leisurely doing plant upkeep. I know, it sounds boring, but it was really quite fun and I felt accomplished. I went down to the Waterfront to get some new potting soil and some supplies. Then I changed the soil in my golden pothos; planted the pothos clipping that's been sitting in a jar full of water, growing roots, for a few months now; took two more clippings from the main plant; and planted a little bean plant that I've had sitting around for a long time. On Sunday I finished up by moving my bamboo into a new, bigger vase. I couldn't find a colored glass vase like what I wanted, so I ended up getting a clear glass vase and filling it with colored glass beads, and it looks snazzy :)

Mike's got dibs on the two new pothos clippings, as soon as they grow out some roots and can be planted in soil. I've become quite fond of the look of potted plants on the baking rack, and I'm tempted to get something else. I could look into some English Ivy (ivy is so pretty!), but maybe I should get something flowering. Mike says his African violets are really hardy and are always flowering, so there's a possibility. Or I could look into something a bit brighter-colored.

In other news, I spent Saturday night with Brian at a local production of King Lear, which neither of us have ever seen live. It was fantastic! The actors were great; kudos in particular to Lear, Edmund, Edgar, Kent and the Fool. And I really liked how Cordelia was played. Hmm, maybe I should just stop trying to pick which were the best out of a fantastic group, and say that they were all terrific :) My only regret was that I hadn't read the play (or any Shakespeare) in a while, and I found it hard to follow along in a couple of places, especially when the intrigue got a little thick. But I already knew the general storyline, so it wasn't much that I missed. Also, we saw it in the little theater inside the Stephen Foster Memorial, which is, like the O'Reilly Theater downtown, one of those places where you can't really have a bad seat.

I'm glad we went. I was debating going to see Jesus Christ Superstar this weekend, but then I saw a poster for this and I realized how much I missed the Bard. It's been a while since I've taken in a Shakespeare play; I think the last one I saw was a production, here on campus, of As You Like It, which was a couple of years ago. I've been trying to watch my wallet lately, and decided I really could only afford one play, so we picked King Lear. It was worth it.

On Sunday, Brian sat me down and showed me The Hudsucker Proxy, which I have never seen before. If you have not seen it, go see it! It is a fun, hilarious, sharp satire and I loved every minute of it. They just don't make movies like this anymore!

Chalk one off the list of movies I have to see :) Next: Dogma.
